I've been trying to use that as a motivation point. lol

Not only did this year fly faster, but a handful of people I knew died the last year or so.

I caught part of that tradition with my relatives - farmers/railroaders on Missouri River. I have some memory of being at one house 'showing' but I can't identify it, but the rest were usually at a church or church hall. Later funeral halls.
Don't remember hearing about body sitting. I remember the meals though and the whole extended family being together. People had come from out of town so I think you're right that was part of the hospitality. But I think it goes back farther than that. You know, Irish wake and all that.
