What are Coil Overs?

Started out looking for lowering springs to close some of the wheel gaps trying to achieve better looking stance, and then Shocks & Struts - Eibach, FR Handling kit, Steeda, Koni, Koni, and Koni. Now, I have finally reached at Coil Overs.

There's one problem though. What are they? I ask because from my search, most seem to ask for springs or shocks/struts recommendations but not many coil... these.

My short understanding is that they are shocks/struts 'over' coils (springs) as a package. If so why do you ask about springs n shocks/struts separately? I'm such a noob.

Coilovers are shocks/struts with the springs mounted directly onto them. And the race type coilovers use a small diameter lightweight spring and most have an adjuster nut setup that allows ride height adjustment.

Your front struts are a type of coilover, just that they use larger heavier springs than race type coilovers and aren't ride height adjustable.

Thanks for kind reply. So...Coil Overs are 'Race Track ready' Shocks/Struts lightweight springs mounted on them height adjustable. How do these compare to lets say steeda+koni combo in terms of cost effectiveness and which brands are recommended?

I would only look at coilovers if you are looking for a very aggressive drop and still want a good ride, with coilovers you can basically get any stiffness of spring to match what you want to do. I wouldn't say all coilovers are race track ready either since there are some very cheap options out there. Depending on your drop the best thing to do would probably be going with conventional springs and shocks/struts. You also have to think about what else you should replace when lowering because that will increase the cost quite a bit.

I was thinking coilovers since I am making Autocross a more common occurance. That price hurts though. Once day maybe :-)

Ahhh Ok. I'm starting to get a hang of it lol What do you think of Boss adjustable shocks/struts from...Ford Racing?! Do Boss owners consider these an upgrade over FR Handling kit or... are they standard on Boss?

^^ As a Boss owner... I like mine... but I have NO idea of other suspension set-ups other than my '12 base GT and my brothers old '05 Saleen S281.

The boss suspension is adjustable as far as stiffness goes... not height.

Ok so Bosses are adjustable... are they the same ones from Ford Racing?

No, I don't believe FRPP Sells the Boss 302 Struts/shocks. Also, if I am remembering correctly you have to have a set of springs and the FRPP Front strut mounts to run that kit on the 2011+ cars. For a couple hundred bucks more I would rather get the Ground Control Coilovers and get a better handling system than the FRPP spring and shock combo.

Hit up Jayman33 on here and see what he can do as far as pricing goes, he is a great guy to deal with and has some great pricing.

The Boss shocks/struts are good for what they are but I feel like the car should have come with Koni's from the start.

We've ran BC, Ground Control and are now running AST on our 13 Boss for our time trials here in Germany. AST is a bit rich for someone just wanting to do a weekend warrior thing but the ground control Coilovers are by far the best set I have ran in this price range. For 1600 shipped these come with custom dampened Koni's and koni inserts, Eibach race series springs and Ground control CC plates.
You can also get the front bodies custom powder coated too Awesome, awesome setup!

Didn't know about the powder coating. All the more reason why I'm glad I'm waiting to do it right. Sweet!
