The end of last year My 2012 GT began making the noises as I went over bumps or down a rough road. Snow season began and I had to wait until today to have it looked at by a mechanic. He could not find anything loose or broken under the car. It actually, sounds as if the spare tire is bouncing around. I have checked the tire it seems to be firmly installed in the trunk.
I'm considering putting something around the tire to insure there is no possible movement. The other thing I'm looking at, there is a hard plastic like cover over part of the tire and I'm wondering if that somehow could flop around.
Anyone else gone through this and found a solution?
Are you pretty sure it's not in the interior? If so I would definitely be looking at rear suspension pieces and anything in the trunk area. Never had spare issues, because none I've had since 08 had one 😂
This is a convertible. Top works fine but raises the question could there be something in raising equipment coming loose. Actually, this is a really good question. Since it is a convertible, could something have become loose. The top works without any problems, no scraping or any sounds during the raising or lower of the top. But your question has caused me to think of a test of elimination that it's from the tops storage area. I'll take it for a ride with the top down and see if I still hear the noises I described.
Unfortunately, it will be about a week before I can as we're going into five days of rain.

Yes! I forgot your's was a vert. DEFINITELY be checking all that stuff. Especially anything that moves or has hinges.
My '06 would sound like it was hitting someting at times when going over bumps. It would bump (pretty hard at times) like you say, but there was nothing I could find that was worn, or lose. So, I just chalked it up to the dreaded "They'll do that" syndrome.
I know I'm late to the party and maybe this is already solved .... but that upper control arm bushing looks like it might be worn out, allowing the control arm to move and bang around
Have checked all the areas suggested by members and finally found the source of the noise. Weather finally improved so took the car to a tire shop. It always sounded to me as if it was coming from the trunk. I ask the shop manager to have the spare removed and check to see if the jack had become loose. It, wasn't the jack making the noise but this triangled shaped piece (photo) that was bouncing around. As you can see, I put rags under the piece and had a quite ride home. That was a temporary fix and will insert a Styrofoam between the mat and tire. The jack handled is inside this piece and what was bouncing around.
Glad You Found Your Issue. Don't Forget That Little T Shaped Guard When Reinstalling or You Will Get a Hole in the Spare Trunk Floor Cover. I Would Think Styrofoam Would Squeek. Perhaps Just a Old Bath Towel Instead, Which Also Could Be Handy For a Hot Road if Having to Change a Tire! A Bungee Cord Through The Wheel Spokes & Over The Triangle Guard as Well May Do the Deed. Just Thought I Would Offer Some Alternatives!
Yeah, we just had that off to install the rags.
Actually, I think I like your idea better. I've got some towels I can install so will give that a try first, Thanks.

Also, glad you were able to find an easy solution and reason... It figures that it was the plastic/triangle shape bracket used to secure the jack handle and spare tire... It also figures the supplied wing nut doesn't do a very good job in securing the jack handle tight enough to prevent it from rattling either...
When I went out to the car to place the towels in, I discovered the area that you put the black cap on the bolt, has punched through the lower mat. Apparently, one of the previous owners had left it off so the bolt punched through. I'm going to find something that is 6, 8 inches in diameter and put over the hole, to reenforce the area.
I'm thinking of using one of those heavy rubber things you use to twist a lid off a jar.

Thanks not a bad idea. Last night I thought about gluing a Mircle Whip jar lid over the hole and that way, the black plastic piece would have a hard surface to rest on. will still have to put a piece of rubber or something to soften the noise.
I'm looking for the right lid to put in for strength. Took it to town todays, towels and rags only so far. Not a peep out of the trunk. Mustangs that have the tire set up my 2012 has must be sure that plastic piece is in place. In my case the bolt had gone through the lower level cover (particle board?) and was pushing into the carpet.
