Soliciting opinions on rear window louvers

I really want to put rear window louvers on my Boss because (a) the original Boss had them and (b) I think they look cool. I suspect lots of folks think that rear window louvers are like mullets. I'm sure my wife will hate them, in any case. I have a 13 month old son who will be riding in the back and keeping the sun off of his head is the only practical justification for the louvers.

What is the consensus on the louvers - big mistake or retro cool?

Thanks!

Alex

Here is the set I'm looking to buy: http://www.blowbyracing.com/20rofomurewi.html

I've got them and get mixed reviews from others, but the whole solar thing was my original reasoning. Besides, I like them and could care less about other opinions. I did them when I was in Houston and it did cut down on the heat in the car. If you've got a kid back there without them he's going to get baked.

Thanks - by the way, what brand did you install? Any problems with rattling or vibrations?

I'll be tinting my windows the first week I own my Boss. I had window louvers on my 1977 280Z and they were a pain in the a$$. For that reason alone just say no to louvers. Same thing with a car bra. Clear bras are the way to go in the 21st century.

Not sure about the louvers but definitely looking into adjustable tinted windows!

My '11 GT came with them as part of an accessory group. I don't mind them, but they're not my first choice.

I will say this, the rearward visibility for parking lots, lanes changes etc. is significantly compromised.

I got mine from MRT, and they just added a prop kit to assist with cleaning. The only issue I ever had with them was going through a touchless car wash and getting hit with the blower, which broke some of the plastic hold downs. They have since been reinforced. I seriously doubt any tint that would be as effective as the louvers in blocking the sun would be legal in most states, and I also prefer to be able to see out of the car at night. But then there are a whole crop of folks out there that tint windows, lights and everything else on the car that won't let you see or be seen, so it's a matter of personal preference.

Dude,

You've justified their purchase with just those seven words.

Louvers are both cool and original on a BOSS 'stang. A must have accessory.

They're totally cool. I've been wanting to get a set for my 06', but like you, my wife hates them. I'm going to do it anyway, as soon as my car is tinted, and I've got a few more go-fast goodies installed...

I want to do it, I think it will give the car a real nice retro look. I am in the process of trying to find a good set. the sets from American Muscle got bad reviews, so I will stay away from them. I saw these and they look better. I also want a set that can be easily removed in case I get a chance to get out on a local track.

2006Mach1 posted these pics of a set from Astra Hammond. (7 slats)

Any new pics of those?

Have you ever seen a limo? Most areas do not require you to have visibility out the back window as long as you have driver and passenger mirrors. Think of truckers. Modern window tint is very effective at blocking harmful UV rays.

Not cool IMO. Louvers were an option on the original Boss cars and are not offered on the Modern Boss cars. The Boss is a world class high performance sports car and no louvers are needed at the 155 mph computer limited top speed. Now IMO cool would be looking into the rear view mirror and seeing the carbon fiber wing of a Porsche GT3 RS vibrate slightly as I lift going into turn one at Infineon raceway at 130 mph. But that's just me.

I'm inclined to agree here. With the visibility issues that come into play with the louvers, I would want them off for track use. Situational awareness can only account for so much if you can't see what's around you.

Fine, LS front splitter put on to track the car, louvers taken off. When returning to street mode reverse process. All satisfied.

p.s. Both are sure to create havoc with the SHE factor (as in SHE who must be obeyed).

I think the Astra Hammond louvers will look great, just as they do on my 06. I have a set waiting to install as soon as the Boss arrives, which will be in a few weeks with any luck. I have had my 06 over 135 with no rattles, but it wasnt for a long period of time. They do come off easy enough, but may not be as easy as other brands. These have no hinge and prop rod. You unscrew 4 nuts and take the whole louver off leaving the brackets, which are held on by 3M two-sided tape. If the tape is put on correctly, which is easy enough to do, the brackets will not come off. I like the looks of the Astra Hammond louvers because there are 7 lovers instead of 6 and they are made of aluminum. Definantly just for looks though as they aren't going to help on the track! They do keep the sun out though!

Oh and I forgot to say that the louvers do not block your view. When looking throught the rear view mirror, you can hardly see them.

Yep, that is the way it was on the 69-70 but still for the track they would be better taken off.
