Open question / comment to FORD / 2012 Laguna Seca / Boss 302 Cooling
Dear Mr / Mrs X at FORD,
We have a known cooling issue with the 2012 Boss cars when operated at the track for more than 20 minutes in temperatures above 90 degrees ambient.
A bigger radiator doesn’t seem to alleviate the overheating.
One solution it to remove the grill while at the track, this in my option isn’t a true fix.
Another solution is to purchase a new grill form FORD for about $375.00 and remove the excess plastic in the grill and then remove the fog light delete “plates” and install wire mesh, again it is a “fix” but one that costs me the end user. This is what was done to the Boss 302S models along with the Tiger Racing hood. It's also what has been done with the Track Attack cars at Miller.
Cool Tech LLC has a solution that will entail removing the stock water-to-oil cooling system and installing an air-to-oil cooling system, from what I’ve seen looking at their web site all of their products look to be well thought through to provide an engineered solution.
I know there has been mention of someone (aftermarket) doing a “special” grill for the 2012 Boss cars that incorporates the original styling but opens up the grill in a similar fashion to the Boss 302S grills.
All of these with the exception of the “remove the grill” cost the end user money.
I bought into the hype of the Boss 302 being a “Track Ready Car”.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now after seeing the new 2013 Boss’s I like the styling on the 2012 cars better, but mechanically ……..
From the 2013 FORD press releases on the new 2013 Boss 302s:
- “……..functional hood extractors……….”
- “The 2013 Boss also offers a unique functional design feature in the grille with removable covers where fog lamps would be. For improved cooling on track days, the covers can be easily removed with a screwdriver.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s my question to you Mr / Mrs X at FORD,
What if anything has FORD done, plans to do, or is rumored to do to help out the owners of the 2012 Boss 302S with cooling when we use our cars as intended, at the track?
Will you FORD help us out and offer a retrofitted part on your dime or at least offer reasonably priced solution (not much more than your cost), similar to the 2013’s grill?

To summarize, you are asking Ford to provide an affordable part kit to improve engine cooling on the 2012 Boss.
I think the biggest barrier on this is a matter if Ford has to engineer a solution vs something that could easily be offered off the shelf. Getting anything engineered and validated is likely insurmountable.

Ford Racing is offering a 302S grill and air to oil cooler for sale and if they are not available now they will be very soon. The Tiger Racing 302S hood was designed to reduce lift which increases downforce. An added bonus is heat extraction. What I'd like to see is Ford Racing come out with an OEM quality hood with heat extraction built into it like the 2013 Boss 302 hood or some sort of retrofit for our hoods.
I want vents like this for my 2012.

I too would like an option to install the 2013 heat extracting vents on our hood, or an OEM quality replacement hood that will evacuate the heat from the engine bay on track.

+1. A reasonable grill and hood vent retrofit would be awesome. Not sure the Air to Oil intercooler by itself will fix the problem. Need to get the air into and out of the engine compartment, adding another cooler is just going to restrict airflow more.

Boss 302S Grill Availability & Cost
Here's the page from FRPP and a description of the item:
http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...KeyField=13485
The grill is flat black, so if you want the surround to match your car's exterior color like the stock grill you'll have to get it painted.
It apparently does not come with the Boss Mustang grill emblem, so unless you want to switch your old one over to the new grill, you have to order a replacement
The best price so far online is from latemodelrestoration.com 1 866 507-3786. Ask for Tony Messina. He's working up my order for the grill and emblem as I write this post.
Here are the photos of the front and back of the Boss302S grill

It pains me to say this as I'd love to have the 302S grill on my car but an open billet Roush style grill is the way I'm going. I think it has better air flow and it's already been proven the 302S grill does not solve the over heating problem.

I have been saying all along Ford should warranty this problem. I could not wait and did mine myself. The best option out there right now if you can do your own work is a regular Boss 302 grille from partscheap.com $270, a V6 pony emblem for about $22, the shipping is about $20. Then a can of spray paint from Autozone and you get this complete for about $325

V6 differences, the backing tape is a little different but works fine. The second is the chrome around the 3 red, white and blue bars is a little raised, you would need to look close and know what you are looking for to see the difference. If it was the regular grille in case of a repair I would get the Boss emblem, for a track grille the V6 emblem is no problem.
