Lets talk side pipes & drone...

I've had SVT (no plates), Roush (no plates;3/4 plates) and now MBRP (3/4 plates) exhaust. With each muffler the drone level keeps getting worse with the exception of the SVT mufflers. My end game would be to find a plate that doesn't cause the side pipes to drone, but not take away all the grunt. As of now I put the stock GT midpipe back on to confirm the side pipe drone. So my question would be who has experience with aftermarket mufflers and running smaller plates that doesn't cause drone?

My first changeout was Dynomax ultraflow welded, but the tips were 3.5 inch and didn't look right, but no drone, and sounded decent. Then I put on Dynomax Race Bullets with a 3" intermediate pipe (attaches just behind the H) and I have drone from 70 to 80 mph. But they sound the way I want the rest of the time. So, its a compromise but I don't drive much highway. Recently I tried putting the plates back in as I have had them out since I brought it home the first time, but the drone has not changed. I figured I would just keep the stock pipes and put them on if I ever planned on a long road trip.

Factory mufflers on the BOSS, 1" disc in side pipes, no drone. A delightful pop and crackle on decel, but cruising the interstate at 70, very nice.

I have the stock exhaust with the QTP electric valves installed...........close them in 6 seconds if you want quiet and open them just as fast when you see that SS pull up next to you. You can also set them anywhere between full open and closed. About 1 second opening on the switch gives you about the stock sound.

I have Corsa extreems with no plates. No drone and I like the sound. They are also very nice polished stainless muffler with the double wall tips.

I have Magnaflow Street Series Axle-backs (part# 15151),with open side pipes (no restrictor plates). Nice and deep sounding, with very little drone, if any. IMO, they're perfect!

GT-500 axle backs, 3/4" side plates. Rest of exhaust stock. No drone. Not too loud, but just enough volume for me.

Thanks for the input guys. I think i'm going to just sell the side pipes after having the stock h-pipe on for a couple days. I wouldn't be so bad if the car didn't hover around 2000 rpm's 65-80ish mph.

I have my side pipes wide open and there is zero drone at any speed or RPM level. It's the mufflers you are using not the side pipes.

I never had them with stock mufflers. The Svt mufflers only droned slightly in 6th gear. The Roush mufflers don't drone by themselves, but they droned with the side pipes. I tested the theory when I took off the side pipes and had hardly any drone with the MBRP mufflers. If I could find the stock restrictor plates I would put those in to test it out.

If you paid for shipping I am sure I still have mine around somewhere that I can send you.
