Blackstone Motorcraft 5W-50 Reports
Last week I sent Blackstone Labs a virgin sample of Motorcraft 5W-50 (which they did not have on file) and a sample of the factory fill from my Boss, presumably the same oil, after 1400 miles.
Attached are the reports. A couple of things to note are that it seems I had a fair amount of fuel in my sample, probably because I did not run the car hard enough before the drain. I did not let it idle to warm up, but I did not run it hard either. The fuel in the sample may explain the lowered and out of range viscosity. For what it's worth, I have a report from a 40 weight oil, and the viscosity of the Boss' sample falls in the viscosity range of the 40W. Not the end of the world I guess.
Note the TBN of the Boss' sample was still very high, showing there was still plenty of detergent properties in the oil, which there should be after only 1400 miles.
I would love to see the results of the viscosity test from a sample with less fuel in it to see if that definitely caused the lower viscosity, or if the Coyote engine is shearing the Motorcraft oil.
The virgin sample report states that the Motorcraft oil should be fine for our engines. We definitely need more used samples of this oil and the other brands owners are using for comparison.

You mean I should not be using leaded gas? ![Biggrinjester](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrinjester.gif)
No clue why. I should have also mentioned that I think the averages they show off to the right are for all 5.0L Ford engines. I will confirm this and ask Blackstone if they will create a new engine 5.0L code for the OHC Coyote.

Rich, thanks very much for the sample data. I too wondered why they listed your engine fuel as "leaded".
Perhaps more owners will send in used samples and we can build a comparative database.
Thanks again for getting this ball rolling.

NO It's not a good idea to run leaded gas! It is very bad on your injectors and could cause you to have a dry cylinder, which we all know means BOOM...............

Standard analysis is $25 (plus shipping your sample to them... about $3). You can add additional tests (I usually do TBN for my diesel).
Sample is about 1/2 cup... you can request a sample kit (free) on their website. It will come with everything you need to ship a sample back to them safely via USPS. Their website also has a letter for the USPS should they question the contents (basically a letter that states it won't blow up the world approved by the postmaster general). I've only needed the letter once.

I always prefer working with people with a sense of humor. This is classic:
But I need to yell at someone. How about you? Can I call up and yell at you?

Blackstone actually has 4 other samples from the new 5.0, so they will be issuing me a new report, maybe tomorrow, and will post it after I receive it. The comparison to the averages will have more meaning, and they use unleaded fuel ![Smile](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Question for someone in the know: I know that the Boss' con rods and pistons are different than the standard Coyote, but are the rod bearings the same? Any other engine wear items that will set the Boss engine apart from the GT's? I am trying to figure out if it makes sense for them to group all of the Coyote engines together or if I should suggest that they create separate engine files for the GT and Boss variants.
