Whoa, whoa, whoa. We're talking about the '69-'70 GT500-inspired front of the '71-'73 Mustangs...

Bah, my opinion still stands Although I do agree on the 69-70 Shelbys, the front fascia on the 71-73 cars seemed better integrated though.

If your into a tarted up V6 grill... I kid... I kid, the Bullitt treatment was pretty good although thats part and parcel with the Bullitt package to begin with. I would be really disappointed if going forward they used much more aggressive styling on a future Bullitt.

Entirely inappropriate for a GT500 though both from the e-***** and cooling stand points.

Wait--who considered the Mustang II successful? I think that is a chapter of Mustang history that most of us would just like to forget ever happened.

I like the IIs (but I also like all Mustangs) and if successful is (somewhat) defined by sales the II would be a resounding success as it sold over 1 million in only 4 years of production.

I'm still loving Sean Smith's version......very similar, but a bit more angular (new "retro" edge?)

+1

The II may not have been the pinnacle of looks or performance but they sold like hotcakes. Folks nowadays seem to forget this...

I too am surprised at people who want a carbon copy of the 65-69 cars. It's almost like people want a West Coast Customs version of their own 66 Mustang. I hear a lot of agreement on the good looks of the Challenger but, to the greater public, the car is nearly identical to it's predecessor and it's a slab-sided pig, quite frankly.

Maybe the 2005 reboot did save the Mustang; more than likely it actually saved the Camaro because, without the success (even if not in the long term) of the retro / classic Mustang came the imitators.

I have a SN-95. I owned one before and really thought hard about buying a 2011 earlier in the year. In the end I chose my car for a variety of reasons but frankly, I see plenty of Mustang "DNA" in the newer incarnation without resorting to a shark-nosed grill:

I guess different strokes for different folks is what keeps the world turning but I, for one, find myself yawning at most 2005+ cars. To me, the Evos concept would be a great way to move forward.

^I love the retro look of the 2005+'s, but I agree with you about the Evos concept.
I would love to see the new Mustang go forward in that direction.

Exactly. The Mustang II sold so well because the car responded to a market which needed something different...in this case smaller. Sadly, the reputation of the Mustang II on the whole might be altogether different had Ford saw fit to open the wheelwells a tad with a 15" wheel and tire combon inside and then dropped an at least slightly warm 302ci 4bbl V-8 under the hood. Given the light weight of that generation even a modestly powerful 302 could have given the little II the same kind of bragging rights the Fox body would later enjoy in the 1980's. It wouldn't have taken very much at all to put the II into a position to beat up on Trans Ams and Corvettes all the way through 1978. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be.

Either way, sales were stellar and calling the car a failure always seems like a stretch to me.

well, I never had one, never wanted one...let alone three of them. Some were kinda appealing to me, but never had that 'gotta have it' feeling about them.

my poor neglected 69 is still taking up garage space (27 years now) never thought Id see a mustang I liked as much, still my favorite body, but 05 is a close #2...went to the auto show in 04, saw the silver 05 preproduction car (went JUST to see the gt40) and fell in love with everything about it. didnt like the 10 rear(still not a fan) like the look of the 13 rear quite a bit, but I'm already too 'mustang poor' to have to have one...the futuristic ones? I'm sure they will sell, but kinda doubt that 'gotta have it' will return- but I AM hoping- if they do it right, even a futuristic one could look like a mustang... wont be holding my breath though

I *think* the next new mustang I drive will be our yet undriven 09- but that will be bittersweet/after the demise of the 06, which I kinda hope will outlast me on its own

I love my 04 GT. i think they can be very slick looking. I drive around in my friends 06 a lot and I hate not being able to stick my arm out the window. Im only 5'8 so my shoulder hurts after a while when I hang my arm out his window. I do like the retro look a lot, I just hope the next mustang screams American and has red white and blue coming out of the tailpipes with a bald eagle talons for tires. I don't want to see some euro looking car. IMO

Had that exact car with the red cloth interior. I still miss it, had a lot of fun in that car eating up Camaros (even with 2.86 rear in it). Had that car had say a 3.25 or 3.55 gear in it, wow it would've been real special at the time. We had a real rough beginning but once things were ironed out I loved it.
