I just hope Ford does better with the aluminum on the trucks than they did with front lip seam on the aluminum hood in the s197 Mustang

70% of the weight lost was due to aluminum body panels. Another 60 lbs. was from frame modifications.

Perhaps after a few years of F150 production under their belt, the 2020 Mustang could get an aluminum skin (the 2015 has aluminum fenders and hood) with more high strength steel for the frame itself. In a vehicle like that, it could shed 250-300 lbs. with those changes alone. If they can do it for 750,000+ trucks, it should be a breeze for 100,000+ Mustangs.

Maybe, the F150 has the advantage of being a BOF vehicle so marrying aluminum and steel isn't an issue. The Mustang being a unibody on the other hand would require some trick technology to get the same results. Honda did it with the NSX and I believe Audi has done something along those lines as well. I just don't see it happening beyond things like the fenders, roof, doors, et al beyond components than can be bolted or bonded to the steel unibody.

The rear bodysides and roof are really the only parts that don't get hung. You could have an aluminum decklid and doors with a steel unibody, as some already do.
