Great article, but one that showcases my pet peeve, the disconnect that journeymen artist and marketers have when trying to envision visionary ideals. Retro or heritage design intelligently began as an idea to recapture basic traits that made legends but then they stopped, thinking that was enough. The T-Bird was a great example, a car that created desire but was too expensive based on where the brand had sunk in the marketplace, and poorly thought out with no evolution to accompany the heritage. The '05 Mustang, the first Mini both were closer but where they go next determines if the reset was smart or simply a blip of lost opportunity. I remain skeptical, and as always say look at the "retro" 911 as the way forward. Constant beneficial evolution never becomes dated.

Good article, great comment from Fenderaddict2 above.

I think the term 'retro' has taken on an unnecessarily bad connotation over the past few years. To me, retro is nothing more than staying true to what created an icon. Does it mean making cookie cutter copies of existing designs? No. But, as with the aforementioned 911, VW Beetle, VW Golf, etc, designs can be advanced while staying true to a basic theme. The Mustang being the icon that it is, I think any new variation should pass my blurry vision test. I should be able to take my contacts out (I have horrible vision, btw), look at the new car, and instantly recognize the blurry/fuzzy shape in front of me as that of a Mustang. Upon reinserting my contacts, I would expect to be pleasantly blown away by the advancement of the design in the form of the details. Maintain the dimensions, and let the details take the Mustang into the future.

The Mustang is your favorite band. This band has a very unique sound, so much so that you've gotten to the point that any time you hear a new song of theirs on the radio, you immediately know it's your favorite band, even before any vocals make their way into your earholes. Through their use of specific instruments, unique editing/mastering styles, etc., their sound is uniquely theirs. Sure, song to song and album to album, the arrangement of the notes, the melody, the beat, may all be new. But you still know it's your favorite band. That's what the Mustang is to me, and I hope Ford stays true to their sound.

Great write ups guys!!! You hit the nail right on the head! We don't want to be disappointed with the newest creation but we are dripping with curiosity (at least I am)! I've pretty much liked every model change since I can remember (some more than others) but still liked them none the less. Can't wait for the 50th!!!
