By the way, a 1999-2004 Mustang wasn't really all that retro and still sold better than 2005-2009.

Very interesting thread. I think Ford should, and will, tread very carefully in redesigning the stang. It's the styling aspect that will torpedo the car, not the mechanicals, and that's so subjective. No way they'll bungle this important job. It's not like the T-bird, say, or GM's GTO fiasco where they couldn't master this important element of styling. The stang will be properly vetted with focus groups (sigh) and hard-won experience by a dedicated group of pros. I think Ford has supplanted GM, not to mention Chysler, as the premier American manufacturer. They'll be cautious but deliberate and build on their recent successes. All they need is good decisions at the top and they are getting that these days. I don't believe in designing by committee, but rather following the vision of one guy who knows what's what. I think Ford has that.
I could see this fly styling wise, but think the low roof/high belt could make for a interior as bad as the camaro if theyre not careful...but it definitely looks like a mustang
do wish they would rethink the flatfaced hubcap looking wheels of today...the deeper lip adds a lot IMO.

Or it could be the best thing that's happened to the Mustang in years... Come on, guys, it's not like Ford's going to slap a Mustang running horse onto a 2013 Fusion and call it a day. How about we wait until we've seen something -- camo'd mules, spy shots, anything -- before we begin *****ing and complaining?
Well, maybe they won't turn it into a Fusion, who knows. But in the mid-1970s, they were designing the next-gen Mustang to be a variation on the Futura (luckily that never happened), and of course the Mustang II was a variation on the Pinto.
Hopefully the design team is smarter these days.
