Water Pump failure - Warranty

Last night my water pump started leaking on my 2012 V6 3.7 mustang. The hoses have no leaks and they look like new. There is only 38XXX kilometres on the car.

The basic warranty has expired (Timed out) but the water pump is still under the powertrain warranty.

The ford dealership tells me that the hose (runs from the thermostat housing to the Degas bottle) was allowing air to get in and that caused the water pump to start leaking.
The hose is perfectly dry and absolutely no signs of leaking.

Because the ($50.00) hose was not covered under warrant and it was the cause (They say),of the problem then the water pump will not be covered under the power train warranty either.

They quoted me around 600.00 to fix it.

Basically once the basic warranty runs out, any powertrain failure will not be covered because of some item that was not under warranty causing it.

Hello wmyhal,

I understand where you’re coming from. Just to clarify, if the cause of a part failure is found to be due to a non-covered part, it will not be covered. Similar to aftermarket parts, if the causal part is an aftermarket part, the repairs are not covered. You are always welcome to get a second opinion at a different Ford Dealer as well.

How hard is it to get to the water pump? $600 seems steep to me.

Hi Deysha

Thanks for your reply.

The problem is that the dealer is just saying it was
the hose that allowed air into the system. There is absolutely
no leaks in the hose and the degas bottle never dropped below 3/4 full.
How is it possible for air to get in if the antifreeze does not leak out under
pressure.

The dealer is just using the not covered hose as an excuse to get out of replacing the pump.

The car is not fixed yet. It's in my driveway with a drip. I will not trust that
dealer to fix my car ever.

When the service guy told me over the phone about the hose I called BS.
I called Ford customer server and they call the dealer. Ford customer
service said that the dealer is their eyes and hears so they cant do
anything.

When I went to pick up my car after work I asked for the guy (by name)
that called me and He had gone home sick. The mechanic that made the
diagnoses had also left for the day.

Some other service guy took a look under the hood and said (do me a favor
- Leave the car and I'll take care of it). I did. 5 mins later he calls an said
that Ford had called them and now they could not fix it. I turned around and
picked up the car. They didn't charge the Diagnoses fee.

I graduated Mechanics School 30 years ago. I have changed a ton of water
pumps. I know bad hoses when I see one.

It's Canadian money and that included the $80.00 Diag fee

That is a total lie. I'm pretty sure it's the gasket on the water pump, mine just went out. Replaced under warranty. It's literally the most common thing that happens to these cars at 30,000 miles and there should be a recall.

Thanks for the info guys. My son's 2014 V6 heater was blowing cold until the car would get on the highway. He told me and I took it for a ride. Sure enough the car would be at full temp but the heater was cold. Once the speed and rpms were up it would blow hot. So I figured it was a blend door vacuum problem or something. I looked around for vacuum hoses but didn't see any. So I got on the internet. I found out the heater was blowing cold because the coolant was low. The bottle was empty. Then I read the bottle is empty because the water pump is leaking. The Mustang had 59,600 miles. I took it to the dealership, Grapevine Ford in North Texas, and after two days I went to the dealership and asked if the water pump had signs of leaking would they replace it under the drive train warranty? The Advisor went into the shop and after about 15 minutes came back and said they just pressure tested the cooling system and it was leaking by. They would replace it under warranty. They also got theTakata steering wheel airbag replaced on the recall at the same time. No charge and they washed it too and sent their shuttle van to pick up my son at home so he could get his car.

So check your coolant once you have 55,000 miles and be watching for any water pump problem.
