rust problems?

Hello all,

I am thinking of driving my pony all year round. Which means salt from the road will get on it during the winter months. Has anyone experienced rusting because of winter driving? Is the rust problem only on certain year car?

Any car built in the past 10-12 years is going to have pretty darn good rust protection. Wash it regularly and make sure it's got an underbody wash, wax it a couple times a year and you should be fine.

Thanks Glenn! Do you think the rust from the rear axle is from the salt or some defect?

Thanks Kyle! Do you go recommend a touchless car wash in the winter?

It's intentional from Ford, it's bare steel and they don't coat it with anything. The axle housing isn't going to rust through, it's just a cosmetic issue. And everyone that wishes their rear axle came painted like it does on the GT Track Package or BOSS 302, I can tell you it doesn't matter. The paint has started to flake off my axle and rust has started. Ford would have to use something more resilient like powdercoating if they really didn't want the axle housing to rust over time, and I don't see them doing that.

I lifted mine up at the shop like a couple miles after getting it and painted everything myself. It's sad how much they leave bare. But my undercarriage looks great

Absolutely - the big brush car washes might make the car look clean but the amount of small scratches you get is appalling!

I drive mine year round in Pa and I just take it to a car wash if we get snow. I painted the entire rear axle with a "Chasis Saver" paint that you paint right over rust, even though I cleaned any heavy stuff along with undercoating the entire car. I have also sprayed used oil inside the doors and on the underneath of other cars I have owned but not my stang as of yet.

2011 Premium GT, 400A, GT500 Axle Backs, JLT Oil Separator, Airaid CAI, Tinted windows, side window louvers, 3M clear body armor.
