Idle Jumping And Stalling When Slowing Down In Neutral

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if i could get some feedback or opinions.

I have a 2012 Mustang V6 Premium with Performance Package. A few weeks ago I got the SCT Bama Tuner, Steeda Cold Air Intake (Tune Required), Barton Short Shifter and Bracket, Airaid Throttle Body Spacer, Roush Axle back muffler from American Muscle. I got the dealership to install all of it. Everything was fine (other than adjusting the boot of the short shifter). So for a couple weeks everything seemed perfect, the tune was great and i decided to order the BBK Ceramic Long Tube headers and Catted X-Pipe from American Muscle. Got the muffler shop to install these for me.

I got the new tune with the updated mods for the Headers and X-Pipe. I know to install these headers they disconnected my battery. So I know the car has to relearn the idle trim and the fuel trim. So when i drove it around the car was going crazy jumping between 500rpm to 1500 rpm.

I decided to to look up the manual on the idle reset instructions and disconnected my battery again to do it right. i followed the instructions to a T.....however, it seems the problem is worse because now the car seems to have learned the base idle at around 600 or 700 rpm (occasionally jumping from 500 to 1000rpm and then back to base idle) which is fine because i believe it is still learning..... BUT.... now when i am rolling to a stop in neutral the car will sometimes stall on me.... this doesnt happen all the time... just randomly.....

I know a lot of people say to clean throttle body and MAF sensor...but my car is pretty new.... it only has 14,000km's on it.... can it really be dirty that soon? also people have said to check for a vacuum leak but i had my mechanic friend look at it and he said to take it to the dealership to have them test it.... my concern is... will they have to check the ECU for this kind of test because they may refuse to service the car because of all the mods....

does anyone know how long it takes the car to relearn everything? i want to make sure i have given it enough time to learn my driving style before i decide to take it to the dealership (last resort). i have not gotten any check engine lights (im not even sure i will because i think the tune clears these codes...not sure).

i am just going crazy not sure what to do.... i have even reloaded the tune again.... last night... so i have taken the car out on 2 drives of about 20 km's each.....

has anyone ever had this problem and have it fixed on its own? i am just nervous about the random stalling when rolling in neutral.... can be dangerous.... but it doesnt happen often.

any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.... thanks guys

Clean the Throttle Body. When you have a CAI installed, some oil/gunk usually gets sucked through and causes the butterflies of the TB to get sticky.. it sticks open a little and makes your idle jumpy.... just detach the CAI from the TB and clean it with a rag, the put it back on.

The EXACT same thing happened to my car ON THE WAY HOME from the install. I posted a similar thread and they all told me to do what I'm telling you to do. 10 minutes later, it was fixed.

Thank you, I will give that a try. I heard that Ford uses some type of special coating and only a certain type of cleaner can be used. Do you know what the best brand name product to use is to clean it?

Flip,

It sounds like your tune could be brushed up a little bit to me. All of our Tunes are Custom made for each application by hand so it is possible to have the occasional human error.

If you haven't already, definitely give the Bama Tuning Specialists a call when you get a chance and explain to them all of your symptoms. They'll be able to take a good luck at your Tune file and make any adjustments needed.

Bama's direct contact is in my sig. Comment back and let me know how you made out too!

Hi Shane,

Thank you for your input. I actually called Bama twice yesterday. The first guy i spoke to told me that it sounds like a Vacuum leak... so i decided to make an appointment at ford to take a look. before i went to Ford i called Bama a 2nd time and spoke to someone different. he told me that with BBK headers on the new mustangs that this was a common issue and there was no fix to it right now. I am not so sure if i believe him because i have seen multiple people saying they have no problems with the BBK headers & Xpipe and plus all the reviews posted on your AM website seem positive.

When i went to Ford, I had 2 mechanics try to listen/look for any vacuum leaks... and nothing was found.... i was given the option to leave the car with them overnight... but i decided not to (i wanted to drive the car a little more and see if the problem will fix itself by relearning)

I am not sure how to tell when the car has fully relearned the fuel trim and idle trim...

I was hoping it might just be a human error on the tune... but i am not sure what to do next...

any further advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated...

My 2010 GT is having the exact same problem. I thought it was resolved after thoroughly cleaning the throttle body, but this morning at a stop light, I punched it a little off the line on a ramp, car took off beautifully, popped the car out of gear coming up on a stop light and the RPM fluctuated then stalled.

No codes except P1000 and the car started back up fine.. Talking to AM/Bama through email..

Please let me know if you get your problem solved. I called Bama and they sent me a new Tune with some changes (Not sure what exactly they changed). The only difference i could clearly tell was that it seems like they increased the idle... so now on cold start up it jumps to like 1500rpm (never went that high before) and after a few seconds at idle it stays steady around 800rpm... but when i start driving... it jumps between 500rpm and 1200rpm....

i thought the stalling problem was fixed because it wouldnt go less than 500rpm (before it would go as low as 300 rpm)... but just this past weekend it stalled 3 times again.... however it doesnt stall as much as it used to (before the new tune with the higher idle).

I just want this problem fixed and i have spent so much money taking it to different mechanics to diagnose this problem without any luck... so far i know i have no vaccum leaks.. and no exhaust leaks.

hopefully something can be done to fix our issue

I forgot to ask you if you installed BBK Headers and X pipe as well?
