Air Conditioning went out...

Air Conditioning went out...
I still cannot believe it but my 2012 GTs A/C went out at 40k miles.
Yep. Just stopped working.
I have no idea why and the shop didn't give me much of a reason other than "your compressor".
So $1,200 later... my car is back to having air conditioning.
What happened was:
Thursday (5/30/13) I went driving up from Houston to DFW, stopped an hour into it to talk to a friend, left the car running because it's hot outside, 20 minutes later I come back to a hot cabin.
A/C was on but not working properly. So I turned it off and rolled down the windows thinking maybe it froze over... drove 20 minutes and turned it back on. Nothing... blowing hot air plus it was making a mild clattering sound. I stopped looked around for any belt issues, and obstructions, nothing I could see. So.. periodically I'd try it again but for the next 3 hours in Texas... no A/C.
Warranty ended at 36k, I'm 4k over.
Ford quotes me $2,600 to fix it (Dryer, Compressor, 1 hose, expansion valve, and two belts)
So I take it then to a place I usually get work done and they do the job for $1,200...
Has anyone had this happen?? Air Conditioning issues at 40,000 miles!?
Talking with other friends about it, I too feel it is ridiculous that I should have to worry about air conditioning at this kind of mileage but I guess this is why people buy extended warranties... because air condtioners may break at 40k... and of course! they are never a cheap fix.

Very weird - see this thread: https://themustangsource.com/f726/23...2011-a-522276/ same mileage, identical situation it appears.

My A/C went out at 21K (https://themustangsource.com/f726/good-bad-ugly-512484/). I now have 34K on the car and the A/C is working great.

Why not get an extended warranty for a year? 10 bucks a month or so. Wait a couple of weeks and then report the AC went out. Fix it, wait a year and cancel the extended warranty.

Deal with extended warranties a lot... Most have a 30 day grace period before they take effect. And many will check service histories, Car Fax and any other means they have to see previous service records. If it has a documented issue before purchasing. It will be automatically declined as previous condition. Seen it many times. If you have not been to the dealer yet. Would probably work... But would be without AC coming into the hottest part of year. And most likely the extended warranty cost would mostly cover repair anyway... Just my 2 cents...

My AC went out last week as well
There must be something going on here, my AC went out last Wednesday with 38,500 miles on the clock. 2011 Mustang GT, took it to dealer and they have already put on overpressure valve and condenser/new clutch and are still going through it. Over $1100 on this so far and service department at dealer is not trying to cut me any slack. I remember Ford taking care of major stuff like this for me in the past if I wasn't past 40k miles... Would be nice to see if there is a trend here.

Wouldn't you know... AC just went out on my 2011 GT at ~38,600 miles, and no I did not get extended warranty either.
Guess I have no choice but to bite the bullet and drop the $1400 or so quoted me by the dealer...

Well ****! My AC went out yesterday and it sounds like the same story. Spent the day driving around at here in hot *** Myrtle Beach for Mustang Week. AC worked fine for a good 5+ hours. Turned off the strip to head home, and as soon as I hit Kings Hwy it felt like the gates of hell had been opened somewhere inside my dash. I also thought it had froze up, but after a sweltering ride home (about 1 hr) still no AC.
Since it's Mustang Week and I don't want to miss the fun, I poked around on it today hoping it's something easy like a loose connector on the compressor clutch. (done that before) The compressor spins freely by hand but from what I can tell the clutch never engages. Fuses look ok but I'm going to try some new ones and maybe dig out the volt meter to check the wiring.
I'm still under warranty (11k) but I don't want to hear grief about mods that I seriously doubt have any affect on my AC. My car was also in a collision about a year ago (no AC parts were broken) and I don't want to deal with any blame game BS
Funny thing is I just fixed the AC on my T/A last week. So I guess I will be THAT guy for the rest of Mustang Week. For you guys who are there- It's a blue-green chameleon 99 convertible with white leather. Not too much "brand x" down here this week so go easy on me!!

Really? My AC works great when it works. Gets super cold very quickly. I live in southeastern nc where heat index is over 100 and 90% + humidity. I've had numerous comments about how great the ac is on my 05 and the 12. My friend bought the 05 from me and it still works fine. (About 80k) probably just jinxed him though
