Kenwood/Maestro Base Stereo No Sync

Has anyone installed a Kenwood/Maestro setup in a car with the base stereo without Sync? I'm considering trading "down" to a base model GT that I found locally because I'm looking at building more of a track car (road course not drag strip). Anyway, if the deal were right for me I'd have to get a new stereo in it ASAP. Without Sync maybe I don't need Maestro but I'd really like to have those gauges you can do on the Kenwood. Is Maestro needed for that?

Thanks for any help.
