Update time!

Went over today and got some work done. My sheet metal roof is now off and the top of the headers are stripped off. Here are pictures of my car without the roof...really at the point of no return now....

Then we moved over to the donor part. We had to strip the frame that the glass sits on so it could be transplanted over. This was a ton of drilling. We first drilled all the spot welds with a 1/8" drill bit then went back over them with a spot weld drill bit. Then just a chisel and hammer.

This is the frame without the glass on it for anyone curious...you can see my old roof in the background.

This is about halfway through separating the frame from the chassis. You can see all the 1/8" holes in it from drilling out the spot welds.

This is what the donor part now looks like without the glass frame on it. Looks just like whats on my car right now...same sub frame.

Next we decided to do a dry fit of the frame.

This is us dropping the glass roof frame onto the car.
Not your Average Glass Roof Thread.-img_0528.jpg

This is with the frame on from the front and back.
Not your Average Glass Roof Thread.-img_0527.jpgNot your Average Glass Roof Thread.-img_0529.jpg

Starting to look like something. The next steps will be to weld in the frame and get it sanded (remove the urethane, smooth it all out, grind the welds down.) Then it will get primed and painted to match my L6 Kona Blue. Then we are waiting for the black trim that goes between the windshield and glass roof and rear glass and glass roof. Those are made from sheet metal and are impossible to remove without damaging them beyond repair....cost about $1000 in total just for those trim panels. After we put those trim panels in then the glass can go back, then reassemble the car! I should be going back up next Wednesday...by then the frame should be welded and painted. Then its just wait for those trim panels.

On a side note finally got my reverse sensors painted and mounted...not bad.

Awesome work! I never realized those black panels were metal - I always thought they were plastic with how easy they scratch!

Well today we ran into our first setback. The replacement panels came but the rear panel was all dented and scratched and would not fit flat on the header. So now my timeline is at the mercy of tasca.... Car would have been done by Friday if the panels came perfect.

But on a side note the frame is welded in and the car is getting painted tomorrow. Really looks good.

Also here is what the old panels look like when they are removed...

Now for the pics of the damaged panel....

Needless to say for the price I paid for that panel NEW Im not a happy camper right now.

Here are pics of how the box came which should have been their first indication the part was bad (the bag the part came in inside the box had been opened and taped back up.) I cant even believe this got pulled off the shelf at the Ford national warehouse in Michigan it is so beat up. Notice the x marks in chalk on the box, the front trim which came perfect didnt have those.

Just to keep this updated on what is happening. Tasca replaced the panel free of charge and I got to keep the bad panel as it was decided the damage did not occur during shipping. I just got off the phone with Tasca and the replacement is being sent out today with next day parcel. Which means I can test fit the panel tomorrow with my body guy. We couldn't get the glass guys to comeback until after Memorial Day. So Tuesday afternoon I should see the car with glass back in it. Then I should have the car back that day or Wednesday. Labor and materials is around $700 but that is just an estimate.

Well the replacement panel came in and it fit like a glove. So car is now getting painted. I will hopefully drive back this weekend to see the painted frame. Then Tuesday evening or wensday I should have the car back with the glass installed!

Very nice. It is awesome when a vendor does the right thing and stands behind their stuff. Sound like you are almost there.

You are going to love it.

Theres a reason I didn't trade up to an S550, and its because there is no glass roof!

Same. Only reason I ordered a 2014 instead of a 2015.

I did manage to pick my car up on Tuesday. I put it back together the same night. I was holding off on posting pics until my 401A upgrade was done but I have no clue when the shifter will be in. So without further delay here is the finished product!

Warning Picture Heavy! lol

Just a bad shot I took.

The only problem which is that they couldn't reuse the factory weatherstrip, so they used a universal one that rolls on all 4 edges. But it is what it is, I could probably tuck it down with glue or something...

You and your shop did a very awesome job with the glass roof transformation. From the images, looks just like it came from the factory, IMHO. As for the weatherstripping? I'd just apply some glue adhesive as you mentioned which should hold it down in place with no problem. Anyway, once again, very nice job and congrats

Thank you for your posts on installing a glass roof. I followed from start to finish. You did an outstanding job on that S197. That's a body style that I think was one of the best.

Job Well Done Sir!!

I love that you've built your car into what you wanted it to be! Also, don't worry about the weatherstrip - that actually looks better than the factory one!
