Fogs turn off automaticallt when brights go on

I've noticed that when you turn the brights on the fog lights turn off automatically. Is there a way to have both on at the same time? The brights don't do a very good job of lighting up the road directly in front of you at all. I'm not sure how much extra current draw the lights take in the bright setting and if that's why it wont power them both at the same time, but if anyone has any ideas let me know! Thanks

I believe it's a regulation not to have both on at the same time, not a power issue. You can modify the headlamp relay so that the fogs are sourced from a another portion of it, such as the running lamps, so they won't be interrupted when you switch from low to high beams. Without looking at the wiring schematic, I couldn't tell you exactly which wires to splice/bypass, but it's usually a simple thing.

You might want to check the 05-09 section for the same thing.

There is no regulation that says the low/fogs/driving lamps must be turned off if the highs are on, last I checked. And I checked, given the issues Mark VIIIs have with their lights on the Gen 1s.

Further, seems to me that other cars don't do this either. It's a Ford thing, I've always thought, on this. Much like why they also have 3 lamps in the tail lamps from '94 to 2009, but only use the outside two of them for brake lights... Why? Dunno, just the way it is. Maybe contrast.

It's not just a Ford thing. Every car i have owned has been that way if they are factory installed. Toyota, GM, Ford, Nissan, Dodge.

Typically, there is a single wire you have to cut. This wire senses when the Hi-Beams are turned on and cuts power to the fogs. I have not seen any one post which wire that is. My Trailblazer SS had the same thing with the fogs turning off. So did my Dodge truck and so does my wifes Nissan Frontier.

Regulated per state.. NJ (sorry to say) does regulate this

Fog lights: These auxiliary driving lights may be used with low-beam headlights to
provide general lighting ahead of a motor vehicle, specifically during foggy weather
conditions (N.J.A.C. 13:20-32.25).

They use to test for it during safety inspections to make sure fog-lights shut off when high beams are turned on.
I had a Mini Cooper with "Running lights" & "Fog lights" Running lights work when high beams are on, Fog lights work when low beams are on.. I'm sure you can change or re-wire to your preference..
Just double check your state laws....

Virginia regulates this as well. I failed inspection on another car that had fogs that were independent of the high beam switch.

Car manufacturers will ensure their cars comply with regulations from all 50 states.

It's like this because of what the fog lights are designed to do. High beams point higher and are brighter. High beams in the fog will blind you. The objective of the fogs is to project light lower to illuminate the road under the fog.

That's what's so funny about some (many) calling Mustang driving lights 'fogs'.

I've rewired a number of Proteges to work with the fogs on. The other thing that people always asked for was running lights + fogs. Ford allows that, Mazda does not.

Yeah my Nissan does not either and with the 55w silverstars i have in there i don't need headlights too. Usually going to work in the am at dawn i just want running lights and the fogs.

Oh, FOGS. And or Driving lights.

My bad. Thought we were talking about low/high. Ugh. I'm sorry. In my mind, I'm thinkin' those are part of the regular lights... I always have them on anyway... so... yeah.

/I... can't remember a 96 that did the 3 light thing... unless someone's rewired them?
//Obviously, I'm gettin' old and senile and... what was I doin' here?
///lawn.

Yea driving on the country roads at night deer like to jump out so its nice having the high beams on to look out for them ahead so you can react in time. However the brights do a terrible job lighting the road in front of you so I can't see previously hit road kill and pot holes. Welcome to country roads haha. That's why I'm trying to get both fogs and brights on at the same time, so much fun driving at night lol
