So I have had my 2014 5.0 for 5 years now, paid it off, and want to see if a tune will wake the car up a bit. Not looking to race, just better throttle response, WAY BETTER SHIFTING (AUTOMATIC GRANNY TRANNY), and whatever else comes along with a decent tune.

I have read most folks with the automatics prefer the Bama tunes because they tweak the shifting quite a bit. Anyone here feel free to recommend me a good tune and tuner. I currently have neither.

 

I like Steeda tunes. I ran one before going with the ProCharger. I could select shift firmness from the SCT handheld tuner.

 

 

The transmission is a very important part of the tune for me though. I want the shifts to be very quick and firm.

 

The tune can accomplish that.

 

All of the reputable automatic tunes tweak the shifting quite a bit. Pick one of the well known tuners like Steeda or the Bama tunes from American Muscle and you should be fine.

I ended up with the Bama tune, tried the 87performace tune and the car felt a little stronger on half to full throttle. the cons is the shifting, barely any firmer and the car seems to hold a higher rpm before shifting when just accelerating normally.

The guy at Bama said try the 93race tune, it's safe to run every day. Well, it feels much stronger half to full throttle, bangs the gears pretty hard under full throttle, but normal driving it still shifts like a granny, a little firmer, but not much. And when driving normally, seems to want to holds the gears until around 2K rpms before it shifts under a daily driving acceleration. I wanted very firm shifts all of the time, not just under heavy load. If it's not attainable or recommended for whatever reason, how about telling me why?

With that being said, I think they just sell the tune they created to everyone, don't read the comments you give them or at least don't explain why they did not do what the customer asked. I requested an 87 performance and 93 performance, but was sent an 87 performance and 93 race, no explanation, just "here's your stuff." The explanation was the 87 tune will adjust down for lower octane and up for higher octane. That's what the stock tune does.

I also thought the X4 would look up other codes and dug deeper into the cars electronics, for example, I have a tire pressure sensor that has been intermittently failing and would like to know which one. I thought the X4 would access those types of things. Guess I should have done a little more research.

 

I am not sure how hard a shift can be under mild throttle application. Steeda might have been more responsive to your requests.

 

I am old school, I had a 1971 Malibu 350/th350 with a $20 Fairbanks shift kit in it, and it hit hard 24/7, barked the tires in 2nd all of the time, any rpm. Not sure why the 6 speed in the Mustang shifts so softly.
