I can jet a carb to best mph and time a distributor to best ET. Why is it considered so much more dangerous to do the same thing to a PCM via a handheld?

Some tunes are locked because they dont want you to know its just the SCT Canned Tune with the parameters you request changed.

Bama was unlocked when I bought mine on my 2007 (Dont know about the AM versions). Brenspeed told me they left all the options accessible.

I know for a fact some of the better aftermarket tune suppliers are not just using an sct canned tuine. Especially bama, brenspeed, bbr, tillman, vmp etc... they actually test these tunes and perfect them on dyno's.

There have been numerous reports of people actually going to get a custom tune on a dyno and the tuner not being able to find more HP than an email tune from the better tuners online.

Whether the user adjustments are locked or unlocked, how would you know if it was a custom or canned tune??? End user doesn't get to see the tune, what changes were made.

The older tunes you used to be able to manipulate if they were not locked..

PS I wouldnt bet on not being able to see what was changed. Laptop + Software + Snapshot.

I didnt refer to anyone by name. But their are businesses that engage in this practice. The people Im thinking about are not on that list...

The file type that they use doesn't allow you to see the file, only download to the tuner. Even if you have SCT software you can't open someone elses tune file. Maybe some computer geek could figure out how to open the file in some format where it could be viewed but not with any regularly available software.

They do all this on purpose to protect against file sharing so that the tuners have something to sell that can't be readily duplicated.
