If aftermarket intakes require a tune,
Your ecu figures air volume buy a voltage reading on your maf sensor. The ecu has a "scale" to follow depending on that voltage. After market CAI use bigger housings so when you go from a 80mm housing to a 95-105mm the voltage on the MAF dosnt chafe but air volume changes allot. The tune corrects the scale that the ecu uses to set fuel trims and timing advances.
And the don't offer any real gains ons stock motor. 98% of the power numbers come from the tune. But once you start getting the air out of the car with more open exhaust or headers they start to make more of an advantage.
Some CAI mfg's such as C&L and airaid will tell you that you can gain over 10hp/tq with just their CAI and no tune. I personally have airaid and I ran with and without a tune. If the HP/tq gain statement is true then I certainly have missed it lol. However, with a tune that's a whole another story. To take advantage of an aftermarket CAI you need a tune but like the above poster have said, most of the gain really come from the tune itself.
If you see most who have a no tune CAI they have picked up 5-10 rwhp. If you think you feel this on the butt o meter you are wrong. Even at the track you may not see a difference in that gain. The tune is were most of your et and trap speed increase will come from. More mods the better your CAI will gain you.

There are definite gains to be had with the "no-tune" version of our air intakes. We were the first company to introduce the "no-tune" air intake system with the removable calibration insert. That being said, you will not fully realize the airflow/horsepower potential of our air intake until you remove the calibration insert and upload a quality tune.
Many customers like the option of doing modifications in stages. You will notice, we publish all the dyno results including air/fuel, timing and coolant temps. We also publish extensive flowbench data on our products as we test each new product extensively prior to product release. For further test data, please visit our website at www.cnlperformance.com.

Edit, wrong thread. My bad.
