HID headlight upgrade
Has anyone put one of these kits in a 2012GT? What do you think of it? How long did the install take? Good instructions? Is it a good value?

If you're going to retrofit HID's into your stock halogen housings, I'd recommend one of Retro Solutions' kits with capped bulbs so that you don't blind all oncoming traffic. I have one of their 55W kits and couldn't be happier; their customer service is truly top-notch, too. Oh, yeah, and their kits feature lifetime warranties.

Hey Flagstang, I got their H13 9008 55W SLIM DIGITAL BIXENON HID kit (10000k, 05+ Ford Mustang). I also ordered the bulb capping service. I love them!

If you order the kit, make sure you purchase some dielectric grease and apply it to the areas the installation manual instructs you to. I guess I missed this step and the pins on the input socket of my driver's side ballast began to corrode. Retro Solutions took care of me, though, and all is good now.

Currently a Corvette Owner!
On my 2011 GT, I have installed a 4300K bi-xenon HID conversion kit (from xenonsupply.com), upgraded to Premium CANbus, and slim ballasts, and I don't need caps, because 4300K is equivalent to stock HID, very bright, white, clear, and non-blinding. Looks just like HID OEM stock. Remember, the higher the number you go (5000K, 6000K, 8000K, 10000K) does not necessarily mean brighter, it actually moves further away from the white color spectrum after 5000K. It was my first mod, and worth every penny - the lights are amazing, and so much safer than halogen. 60-90 minute install (very easy), go slowly and be careful not to directly touch the bulbs. No, but you do change out the small bulbs and their wiring harness, and it's tight in there, so you'll scrap your hands by the time you are done. Worth it, though. $900 option from Ford on 2010-2012 Mustangs, less than $200 for a very good conversion kit. Lucky 2013 owners get it on all models standard now.

Hid bulbs only belong behind a projector. NEVER in a halogen housing. That's why the stock hid system uses projectors and costs as much as it does.

11SHELBY - HIDs are better/safer than standard Halogens, and produce a much longer and wider beam of light. Many high-end vehicles are equipped with HIDs standard (Mustangs will have this standard on all 2013 models). If you buy a quality HID conversion kit, you will not blind on-coming drivers. You become a safer driver yourself with greatly increased night-time visibility.
LEWIS - You are correct, I mis-spoke. Installing HIDs into a vehicle not originally equipped with them from the factory is technically illegal. Practically speaking, you stand little chance of being cited for them. Try to avoid the blue/yellow/pink bulbs (which look awful anyways), and stick with OEM white, and you will be fine.
I've parked next to other Mustangs with the factory HID option installed, and our lights appear identical, close up and far away. My high-quality kit does not blind oncoming drivers, I am no brighter than any BMW, Lexus, etc.
