Either this hasn't been brought up or my search skills are lacking: Does the bright trim on the 2013 premium steering wheel snap off like on the earlier S197s? I'd hate to try it and break something when I get ready to paint them semi-matte black.

It's remarkable to me that Ford keeps plastering the interior of these cars with shiny stuff that reflects in the windscreen and side windows, obscuring important views. The angle of the horizontal bars on the steering wheel is perfect to send sunlight right into my eyes.

I'd like some insight as to how to black out the rings around instruments and vents, as well.

Otherwise, I'm liking this car pretty well.

Get a second set of everything. Paint them various shades of black, or use a vinyl covering. Problems solved.

I did. I no longer have shiny chrome or silver in my car. All blacked out. It's evil lookin' at night. But the best part is the chrome trim rings of the dash vents and the gauge cluster do not blind me at certain times of the day. Oh, there's a bit of reflected light on the trim rings, as they're shiny black, but way WAY not as harsh. Easily livable.

I like it anyway.

If they'll come off, why not have them hydrodipped in some carbon fiber or something? I've got a few things I want dipped and it's cheap.

When I started owning cars I used whatever means I could find to blacken or de-reflectize the irritating things: sometimes I'd use black poster paint to see if the effect was worth the effort, and follow up with either permanent paint or tape. It took me a while to work up courage to just snap off the steering wheel decorations on my last Mustang, but the semi-matte black did exactly the job I wanted.

On the other hand, I like to put reflective things on the back of my cars: Mr. graphic-express.com has sold me a Mach-like trunk decal for each of my four Mustangs; silverish-white on the white car, grayish-black on the black cars.

The '13 Service Manual speaks of Steering Wheel Removal:

Removal and Installation

Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B .
NOTICE: Do not use a screwdriver or prying device to remove the steering wheel spoke finish panel(s) or damage to the steering wheel may occur. Place fingers near the base of the wheel spoke and gently pull upward to remove the finish panel(s).

NOTE: The steering wheel spoke finish panel(s) can be serviced separately. A new steering wheel does not need to be installed.

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the steering wheel when installing new steering wheel spoke finish panel(s).

If necessary, remove the steering wheel spoke finish panel(s).
Remove and discard the steering wheel bolt.
To install, tighten the new bolt to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
Disconnect the steering wheel switches/horn electrical connector from the clockspring.
Remove the steering wheel.
Route the connectors for the clockspring through the steering wheel.
Tape the clockspring center rotor to the outer housing to keep it from rotating.

NEW INFORMATION: Well, shucks! It didn't work for me. I reckon they are dealing with a different steering wheel, or they have a different assessment of what "gently" means, or I've been blessed with a total lack of comprehension with regard to where "the base of the wheel spoke" lies.

Any road, I'm still not to the point of sticking a screwdriver in there somewhere and risking a scar for life.

 

Anyone ever get this done? I just purchased a 2010+ GT500 steering wheel and want to hydro carbon dip the spokes like my 05-09 wheel currently has. I don't have the wheel yet, but I have been searcing the forums to find out if I can get it done or not.

 

Great thread! The Chrome bezels are the reason why the guages reflect onto the windshield when you have the rings illuminated.

 

Would plasti-dip be worth a try? I've never used it but if it holds up on exterior parts maybe it would work for interior parts.

Awesome was bought with love. And money, sure, but love. I can't imagine not having her now. I was stupid and got rid of Muskrat, and The Mark, and even the Orange Bomb.

I will not do that with this car. But yes, indeed, the feature, as you put it (nice!) is something that I am still enjoying every drive. I am both proud and pleased every day.
