2013 SVT Cobra Conversion

The parts have been rolling in slowly so this Saturday will be busy. I finally mocked up the changes I want to do to our new 2013.

Here is a list of the mods I've got done or still planned:
  • Redline hood struts
  • JLT oil separators
  • 2012 Shelby upper & lower grills to better protect the radiators.
  • locking gas cap
  • SVT valve caps
  • Cobra shift ****
For the paint scheme, I'll be removing the blue stripes. While I like blue stripes, they're too dark and look black most of the time. I do not like them on the vertical surface either front or back. They confuse the shape of the grill openings and it looks like a jumbled mess in the back with the 2 horizontal black panels.

Here are pictures of the color scheme:
  • Blackout hood following the lines of the hood vent. The black will be matte black (maybe gloss depending on how it looks) & the vent will be painted to match.
  • Windshield frame will remain white.
  • The trunk lid will be black.
  • the rear spoiler will be black.
  • the side stripes will be replaced with black GT500 stripes
  • all SHELBY will be removed from the car
  • SVT cobra tag will go on the back of the car instead of the SHELBY letters.
No disrespect to Carroll Shelby, just thought I'd shake things up a bit. After all, he didn't do a lot on this vehicle other than set the goal of 200 mph, review what SVT Egnineers did and give it his blessing (and his name).

So far, I've installed the following:
  • JLT oil separators. These things are so easy to install. Just watch the video on youtube. It's really just a snap off & snap on installation.
  • Redline painted hood struts. These are totally awesome. I ordered them painted so the brackets would blend in with the car. VERY easy install and came with very good directions. The only thing I did extra was to cover the side of the washer that comes in contact with the hood with duct tape to keep the washer from scratching the paint during the install. It was easy to neatly trim any extra tape that was hanging over the edge of the washer before installing. You can't see that it's on there.
Both of these products are very well designed and very easy to install. I can only hope that the rest of the mods are this easy to do.

so you're going to make it less shelby by adding shelby grilles and GT500 stripes? I think if you want to make it some kind of SVT car you should not have GT500 anywhere...

Was thinking the same thing...and I wouldn't do the SVT Cobra badging. Maybe just a blank faux gas cap with the snake or SVT emblem from an 04 Cobra. Aren't you rarely going to drive this car? The open grilles are for cooling, not just for show. And they're part of what makes the 2013 a 2013!

Well I like the idea of deshelbying the car. There's a lot more Shelby cues I would strip off personally. Hood. Bumper cover. Spoiler. Wheels.

You can do whatever you like but you'll never change the Gt500 into a cobra. The VIN can't be changed. You should probably check the history books and see who was building the GT500.

Personally I would start with a Boss. Supercharge it and pull all the Boss crap off. Just because it has way less Shelby to it.

They go hand in hand but I always refer to mine as a 500, but it's still Shelby.

Cleaned up thread . . . . again. It's like a broken record around here.

How about this . . . next time will be vacation time for those that like to make a thread their own playground. (Outside of the designated "playground" threads.) And this message isn't coming only from me, but all Mods and Admins.

If there had been a BOSS convertible, I would have ordered that instead of the GT500. But Ford has never made a BOSS vert & probably never will. Too bad because the BOSS would make an awesome vert step up from the GT.

I guess we're somewhat splitting hairs here. The car is both an SVT Cobra & Shelby GT500. As I understand it, SVT did almost all of the development work & licensed Shelby's name to help market the car. Because of this, it is actually more SVT Cobra than Shelby. I guess since it is based on the Ford Mustang, it is actually mostly Ford Mustang more than anything else.

The 2012 grill is an SVT item. It is ordered from Ford, not Shelby American.

To get a car from Shelby American that performs as well as the SVT Cobra Shelby GT500, it would have cost over $100K.

The open grills are for making sure that during high performance driving, the engine stays cool. The bottom lips of the grills are also shaped to help generate downforce to keep the nose planted @ 200 mph. We bought our car for cruising. That's why we ordered the convertible limited to 150 mph and didn't waste money on the performance packages. For cruising around under 70mph, the 2012 grills will do just fine. Oh, by the way, I bought the grills from a member here who replaced his 2012 grills with 2013 grills. Please don't PM him and bombast him for changing the look of his car; he's a good guy.

I expected a lot of senseless flak from some of the members here about my vision for my car based on other threads I have read here. Bottom line is I bought the car & will modify it to my tastes. I'm not making it into something it is not already. I've seen numerous threads where people bash V6 or GT owners who put BOSS stripes on their cars either as a tribute or just because they like them.

If there is one thing that history teaches us, it's that history is in the past. Today is now and tomorrow is the future. It's true that in the past, Carroll Shelby & his band of misfits took Ford Mustangs and added parts to them to make them into the GT350s & GT500s.

Now, the Ford SVT Engineers are making the car at Ford by adding Ford SVT parts to a Mustang. It is not built by a group of guys doing an aftermarket conversion (although technically...). Those guys still exist; they're called Shelby American. They take Ford Mustang and add Shelby American parts to them to make them into GT350s...

While Ford markets the car named as a GT500, it seems to have these funny little snakes all over it! What are they called again?

History lesson over. And now back to our regularly scheduled build thread. Thanks for stopping by.

I had the same thoughts as you about the open grill. I see so much stuff on the roads driving around here that the first thing that popped into my mind when the car first debuted was "wonder how long it would be before a rock goes through the radiator/heat exchanger/condenser?" I had a Shelby GT and with the big opening in the middle of the lower bumper like the GT/CS, by the time it had 9k miles on it the condenser was banged up pretty bad in a couple of spots (fins mashed like someone had taken their thumb and pushed real hard).

I think you missed the lesson. The lesson is that FORD not Shelby has built the GT500 since 1968. The first GT500's, the 67's, were the only ones built at Shelby's facilities in L.A.. The GT500 has been built by Ford throughout its lifetime minus one year. The Cobra emblem doesn't have anything to do with the car itself, you know that, right? THE GT500 IS NOT A COBRA you're confused. It's like watching a train wreck about to happen, happen.

So wait, now the Ford Mustang SVT Shelby GT500 Cobra is a train?

Well, the first thing I noticed is that it appears that you dropped it too low and now you have tire drag on the well liner because I can see its popped open (a common thing for mustangs that are too low)
