help - Squeaky convertible top

When my top is down there is a VERY annoying squeak.
I found it is coming from the metal frame - the folding joint.

I looked in the manual but didn't see any recommended lube.
Any ideas?

Many thanks

I have applied lube to the hinge points on a convertable top on a Sebring, and it stopped the squeek. I prefer Triflow, since it has a oil carrier combined with Teflon and lasts a long time compared to WD-40.

I was just going to say WD-40...but I think either would work fine.

I took mine to the dealership when I had the same problem. I couldn't find the squeak, but they fixed it under warranty.

Wd40 is a cleaner that initially lubes but then dries

Mine was also on the passenger side. For the longest time it only squeaked while I was driving. This made tracking it down very difficult, but eventually it got so bad that I could press on the top and make it squeak, however, I still couldn't find where it was coming from.

The dealership had my car for 4 hours but it came back squeak free.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but has anyone found out what is causing this, and an easy fix. Mine has been doing this for quite a while now, and I hate when dealerships have to work on the car.

Also, since I have a light bar in the car, they are probably going to say that it is a bracket from that or something. I know its not, because if I push on the top with the bar out and the top down, it still squeaks.

My remedy so far has been to just turn the radio up more. But, since I'm getting tired of the 10 minute fuel fillup, I am probably going to have them fix the top at the same time, assuming they don't have to remove the top. If that's the case, I'm throwing a big NO!!! at that one, and will just live with it.

So, back on topic, does anyone know which brace in the top is doing it, and how to reach it.

Considering how quickly they were able to fix mine I highly doubt they removed the top.

My big fear was a grease stain on the headliner... but there was none.

+1 on the Tri-flow excellent lubricant.....I'd stay away from WD-40 as it is really a solvent - great for removing oil, etc, goes on wet, then dries out and does not leave residual oil....that's why it works so well removing tar, etc. from your cars finish.

I also have that anoying squeak when my to is down, it already went to the dealer for this without success.

On mine I'm able to replicate the problem but can't find where the squeak comes from.

When to top is completely folded if if shake the top with an up and down motion, very slightly. Just moving it within the little loose it has, then the squeak start. Sometimes you have to do it a couple of second before it start squeaking.

It's like if 2 pieces of bare metal were rubbing together.

All hinges have been lebricated, even tried to put tape in som area to see if two metal pieces were touching and it still there !
