Fuel Pump TSB - did changing it "fix" the issue?
Fuel Pump TSB - did changing it "fix" the issue?
First off, first post. I've searched numerous Mustang forums and haven't found an answer. If I missed it here, I apologize.
I have a 2005 Mustang (v6 convertible - no mods other than the head unit). Last weekend, I took a 10 hr drive. 5 hrs into it, it started hesitating at an on ramp. Looked it up and "appeared" to be the known issue with the fuel pump on these cars. I've driven this drive (and ones that were even longer before) with no issues. On the way home, I made it the full 10 hours without any issues. I had the low fuel rail pressure code (twice, according to the guy @ autozone that I had pull the codes). Since then, I have driven short trips around town (no more than 30 minutes each way) and the codes have been cleared and not come back.
(ok, getting to the real question now - sorry for being long-winded!)
I have read on another forum that replacing the fuel pump only temporarily fixed the issue and that the pump (mechanically) isn't as much the problem as the design allowing air bubbles in the fuel line is. So, if I drop the $200-300 for a new pump and sending unit that it MIGHT fix it for a while, but might not, and also the new pump won't be any more mechanically sound than the one I already have (i.e. it might occasionally sputter, but won't leave me stranded). I've also heard the opposite - i.e. that the change was the best thing ever for their car and that the throttle response is improved, etc. I'm typically inclined to think that the truth is somewhere in the middle but I figured I'd ask here first. Has anyone who's replaced the pump continued to experience the problem (at least in the first 30-50K mi after replacing)? I have just short of 80K now and don't see the point in changing the pump if the new one is going to do the same thing. Did the flaw in the design get fixed in the new fuel pump? If so, can someone give me the model # of the new and old one so I don't buy the wrong one?
Thanks a ton! Sorry for the mammoth post!

I had mine replaced in the summer of 2005, the first summer I had it. Mine would sputter after as short of a drive as 20 minutes on the highway...but only during acceleration.
I have NOT experienced this issue since the replacement...and I have driven for 14 hours.

No, I don't, sorry.
They used whatever pump was used in the TSB. I had it in the shop before the TSB came out for the same problem and they replaced the Throttle Position Sensor. That didn't work obviously, but thankfully the TSB came out like a month or so after.

Same here- TSB fuel pump. Current pump has been running strong no matter what I throw at it. No sputter or anything. If you do run the pump at under a 1/4 tank often the pump will slowly fail from the heat. It it submerged in the tank which keeps it cool.
I have an 07 gt/cs I started to have the sputtering problems when heated up worse .
Changed fuel filter it was ok , cleaned & tested every fuel injector was ok to.
I then tried the techron treatment.
then a new fuel pump was ok for 2 months then it failed a pump part , so I returned it clear & blew out the original pumps sock or pick up & everything was good. So what I deduced is the amount of crap that gets in our fuel tanks every time we fill it. last june/July every parts store ran out of pumps, It took about 3-4 months it cams back , I immediately pulled my pump & sock was all covered in silt 😠(better than getting to the injectors. so I washed out my tank cleaned sock again then 6 months later again it started pulled pump looked in tank full of silt.
So all we really need is the socks or pickups on the bottom of the pumps, but I cannot find anything for these, I'll have to make one or change pump style no way I'm buying a new pump every 6 months for BAD gas.

Yeah, I'm thinking you need to take that up with the fuel supplier(s), 'cause one of them is messin' you up.
I got 120,000+ on Awesome and not one issue with the fuel pump...
/And now awaits the fuel pump to go out, the jinx has been said...
