check engine light and transmission fluid change?

First off, I'm new to this site so here is a small intro: I have a 2006 Mustang. automatic, V6, stock as far as i know. I bought the car used almost 3 years ago. Theres about 64000 miles on it. I'm a college student who doesn't know a thing about cars (I'm sure that's fairly obvious). Tried looking at other posts to see if I could find an answer to my questions but i couldn't so here i am!

My check engine light came on so I took it in to get the code read. The code was P0775. I was told I need my transmission fluid changed and I was wondering if that could actually be a solution? Also, I took my car to Meineke to have my tranny fluid changed, they charged me $110, but then 30 minutes later they said there is no way to change the fluid without taking the transmission out, and this ment they would keep it a few days. This didn't sound right to me so I got my money back and left.

In short, my questions are
1. Would changing my transmission fluid turn off my check engine light?
2. Can you even change the transmission fluid without taking the entire transmission out? If yes, where can I go and about how much should I expect to spend?
3. Any other solutions / suggestions / opinions etc you are able to provide is appreciated.

I have to go in and get a smog check fairly soon and I know it's an automatic fail if your check engine light is on, so I am kind of panicking. Especially since my time and budget are VERY limited. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Please let me know if any additional information is needed.
