Your Ford came with oil based oil in it. Why did you put that wax based junk called Penzoil? The three to adviod are Penzoil, Quaker State and I think Havoline. Use 10-20W year round. Conoco is what Ford puts in them. Its part synthetic.

 

That *might* have been true in the 1970s. Today's API SM and ILSAC GF-4 oils are significantly superior to the oils of yesteryear. Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 is a "Full Synthetic" that meets the Ford 5W-20 specification, along with API SM and ILSAC GF-4. Conoco/Phillips does supply the Motorcraft 5W-20, but the standard 5W-20 is a synthetic blend. This could mean any combination of things: a Group II/III blend or a Group II/IV blend. Pennzoil Platinum is supposed to actually contain some Group V synthetic in an otherwise Group III base stock. Also, almost all 5W-20 oils are a synthetic blend at the very least. There are no "dino" 5W-20 formulations that I know of.

 

That was possibly the most uninformed oil related thought I have ever heard. If you don't know anything about oil, don't spread misinformation. Everything you said there is false, except that Conoco supplies Ford with it's Motorcraft oil.

 

Its oil which could mean ALOT of things. like piston rings but i dont why it would be that although it could be.

 

I talked to a few people locally and they said it's not uncommon for high performance engines to do this due to the PCV system. However, I wonder what the negative effects of removing all the oil from the air intake system would be, considering I can visually see a coating of oil in the combustion chamber of my 4.6L 2V V8. I suspect the oil from the PCV system is used to lubricate the cylinder wall to reduce/prevent ring wear. If you remove this oil, then the rings may wear faster (say, 150k instead of 200k miles, just as an arbitrary example). The reason people install separators on forced induction cars is to prevent oil puddling on the intercoolers which WILL reduce the heat transfer efficiency of the intercoolers, resulting in loss of power. I doubt they care about ring wear at all.

 

Seems to still be a mystery why our cars puff the blue smoke. I guess only someone with Ford 4.6 3V engine knowledge might know why. Does anyone know a current Ford engine plant engineer? I am more curious than anything else at this point.

 

Marauders with the 4.6 4V V8 puff blue smoke but IIRC it was because of faulty/worn valve guides. We may have the same problem as the 4.6 4V.

The older 4.6 2V v8s puff blue smoke upon take off due to worn out valve stem seals.

 

Has anybody taken a look at their throttlebody or inside their intake manifold? When I did my delete plates, both were coated with oil and a slight puddle in the back of the intake manifold (car was parked on an incline). The blue smoke is probaby from the oil pulled through the PCV system being burnt off.

 

Have to take my GT in for a new gauge cluster as my amp gauge went dead so they must replace the whole thing and my GT smokes at cold startup so they are going to look into it but they want it over nite.But got it on record .

Not all Marauders do that or have that problem, and it doesn't seem to effect '04s. The 'problem' is at the rear of the drivers side head, where they may be a cooling problem, causing wear of the rear valves and guides.

The '03 Cobra and Mach1s apparently can have the same symptom.
Some Navigators with the 4V 5.4L are reported to have it too.

 

Any news on this issue? Mine seems to have this problem as well.

 

I think the general consensus on other sites is it's coming from the PCV system. I'm installing a air/oil separator this weekend on mine. I've had it puff a large cloud of blue on start up after I've had one end or the other on jack stands for a long time (installing headers or doing suspension work). I removed the hose last weekend to look at it and it was dripping in oil.

 

It seems to happen with these modular Fords.I have owned 5 F-150's

1999 4.6L
2001 5.4L
2004 5.4L
2007 5.4L

as well as my 07 GT. Seems to be the norm for them when it's cold and sat over night or not even as long, sometimes only a few hours. Never seen it low on oil thou and oil gets changed every 3-5k with motorcraft 5w-20 oil and motorcraft filter. I woulden't worry, I stoped worring when I saw it happen on my 99. Oh and just for the info all of the trucks had 100K plus miles and the 07 has 22K.

 

If it is piston rings, you can check that yourself very easily. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature , then , asyou roll out of first into second gear, accelerate through second , but don't shift third , just back off the gas petal and let the engine act as a brake . THen, as you look out the back , accelerate again - hard . If you see blue smoke, it points to the rings as the culprit .

 

just my 2 cents - mine does this exact same thing - i was concerned too then searched all the forums and it is common; mine is a jun 05 car with 11000 miles. glad to know i am not alone.

 

I just noticed the same thing with mine. Same type of situation, car was run for short period of time (removed from garage) sat a while. On restart I had a cloud of blue smoke come out of it.

 

i cant see the blue smoke but i do get a oil burning smell sometimes at start up after sitting overnite
