Going to try powdercoating

I have been tossing around the idea for awhile now so I've been doing some research. It doesn't seem too difficult to do and a few people I've spoken to said that it wasn't that difficult.

I'll price some powdercoat machines from Harbor Freight, and a respirator as well. Powder dosen't seem too expensive either.

The oven at the craft shop can handle parts up to 26 1/2" wide with the rack and 28 1/2 without the rack in the oven.

I think I'll try some scrap metal first, to get a feel for application and consistancy. Once I'm comfortable with it, I'll step up to a set of valve covers and cobra intake hat that I have, brake calipers are probably in my future as well.

If you ever start doing some on the side, I know alot of people around here who would stand in line to have it done.

I get nervous on other peoples stuff, at least until I know I'm good at it.

I'd hate to get over eager and end up having a drip/run or something in somebody's part.

From what I've read, I don't think you CAN put a drip/run in it as the charge evens out the powder.

Powdercoat those seat frames. No one will see them.

I picked up the powdercoater, some yellow and black "paint", and masking tape yesterday.

I'll try to pick up some scrap metal and practice coating stuff soon. My other valve covers are stripped already so they can be ready for coating soon.

I did my MAF meter today. I did it in a black Matte finish, it turned out pretty well. I also did some scrap with the yellow to see if it matched up to the Cobra but it didn't.

I could probably coat the calipers in yellow and with them being behind the rims you wouldn't notice the difference.

What do you think?

I'll post some pics of the meter later.

Well, I attempted to coat one of my covers today. I had a couple of areas where the powder didn't get to. I went ahead and put it into the oven with the thought that I could respray any areas that needed more coverage.

I guess there was some crap in the oven, when I pulled out the covers there were some black stuff in the paint. I will enjoy sanding that down and respraying them.....It was very glossy though.

ick.. gotta love the trial and error part! Good luck with em! We spilled paint on one of the valve covers today and getting it off the blue was pretty hard and tight.. i dont even wanna imagine sanding them!

I thought about getting a guy over in rogersville to powdercoat misc. bolts off my car.. but hes pretty exspensive for a bolt! I think i'm either gonna hold out and try that kit out in the next couple of months.. or just go over to fastenal in muscle shoals and match up the bolts to some nice chrome hex heads..

For small stuff like bolts, brackets etc. It would be so simple, you don't have the coverage problems to deal with. (no coverage in certain areas, or to much powder in another)

Well, I picked up some acid to put on the covers to strip the paint off. Didn't work, so I picked up some paint remover, It is working slowly but surely. I have no idea why I put a yellow that I know didn't match the color of the car on the valvecover. I guess I just wanted to play with the process.

I am going to pick up some satin black powder and try it again. I also think I will put a different nozzle/diffuser on the end of the gun to get a bigger coverage area to minimize build-up in areas.

The calipers will be up next, I will have to get some silicone plugs for the bleeder valve holes.

I have to do some research to see what is best for application of the powder, long sweeps or short bursts. I have a feeling that longer sweeps may be better. It seemed as though the powder was more "charged" during a longer spray.

Can you beadblast the valve covers? If so, bring em over.

How are the seats coming?

I can bead them, what kind of media do you have in there?

I just have one more front bottom, and the rear bottom to do. Should be done by Thursday.
