Its three. There are almost always three cars built for the Indy 500. But in the case of the 64 1/2 Mustang, only two ran during the race because of mechanical problems, but three were built. That is if memory serves correctly.

What you might be looking for is located on the engine and takes some explaining. Long story short, 1999 Cobras weren't running on a full head of steam. The cars were rated at 320 flywheel hp and were said to be putting out around 300-305. This was based on pathetic chassis dyno numbers in the 270 range. Add 15-17 percent for drivetrain loos and you get 300ish hp. Ford did a recall on all Cobras putting a retrofit on them to put the hp where it was supposed to be. The retrofit consisted of a redesigned exhaust system, and an extrude honing of the intake. This retrofit was later added to the 2001 Cobras.
