Motor Trend Online GH-T Story (Stripes are Decals)

Motor Trend's website has a neat story on how the GT-H cars are converted. The mystery of the day - how do they stick those Shelby letters across the vinyl stripes in the back??

Looks like Shelby should have a good supply of 8.8 rear-ends for V6 owners.. I wonder how much Shelby is asking for an 8.8?

It would be nice if they only charged $399 plus shipping.. LOL!!

Dream on I guess!

They would sell a ton of those 8.8's if so though...

That would actually be worth pursuing, not to mention the rear's would have the shorter-than-stick-shift gearing (they're all autos).

MSP, that was far and away your most relevant post ever!!!!

So they would have the stock 3.31 gear which is found in the manual and automatic V6's.. Its a straight trade across the board for V6 owners.. LOL!! Unless I am not understanding your statement..

I'm not sure if your being sincere, or if I have missed a crucial fact.. LOL!!

He did, which is why this is an UNSOLVED MYSTERY!

I think most people concluded they were painted because the letters went across the stripes, which follows what we've heard about the reason the GT500 did not get a similar SHELBY emblem.

The stripes may have been painted on the show car (prototype) but vinyl used for production cars.

It would also be easier to repair.

Weird, I could have sworn the autos had shorter gears than the sticks. I hate being wrong...

This photo on the Shelby American website seems to show the stripes on the prototype are also vinyl.

Since all of the production cars have vinyl stripes and the letters stuck on them, the mystery remains!

And this photo shows a car (photo/show?) after paint with the stripes still masked off.

It is my opinion that the tape along side of the stripes was put there to line up the decals, and the sides of the car are masked off to prevent scratches from the workers leaning against the car.

Of course, I could be wrong, but I think the only thing that gets painted is the front fascia.

Anybody else notice that unlike all previous pix of the GT-H, this one has the bottom of the GT/CS spoiler (the splitter) stripped?

Looks similiar to the photoshop I did last week in the TMS photoshop thread section, except I used a Steeda lower fascia and kept the factory hood.

Looking at the photo again I think the guy behind the car is getting ready to buff out the paint. If you look closely you can see he has what appears to be an air driven buffer in his hand. Tape would be on the stripes to protect the vinyl stripe edges from the buffer. Plastic would be there to protect the rest of the car that probably had been buffed already. Mystery continues.

The Letters are drilled before the stripes are applied. The wholes are made using a template, when the stripes are layed, the template is replaced and the holes are punched thru the stripes. The letters are then applied.

Hope this helps
