Wonder how much of a rape fee the owner had to pony up for the priviledge of being one of the first to bring a Shelby to a Mustang show?

Meanwhile, just picked up the latest issue of Top Gear (their muscle car special), and while they liked the GT500's power and value-for-dollar equation, they didn't like much else >>

Like previous Mustangs and all muscle cars of fond memory, the GT500 is about going fast in a straight line (0-60 - 4.9 seconds, top speed - 155 mph). The joy disappears, and the cheapness rears its pointy head, the minute you hit a bend, especially an indifferently paved one. You tend to forget about the Shelby's downmarket live rear axle while rolling along a smooth road, contentedly basking in its torque and the car's uncanny ability to lay the shrieking V8's magic down without winding up or otherwise behaving like it was preparing to rip its differential out and toss it to the coyotes. But all too soon a topographically challenging corner comes along to remind you of the ungodly price unsprung solid axle extracts, as you skitter and Watusi your way through. Though the Shelby feels reasonably assured at triple digits, the odd porpoising motions its body takes when encountering lane changes and undulations in the road does not inspire the last degree of confidence. Or even the next to last. Absolute grip is considerable, but one still fears the Reaper.
