Winter Setup

Any recommendations on floor mats? The ones pictured in this thread don't look like they have a lip around it to collect water. I had a plastic one last winter but somehow the water gets around the edge and the carpet was wet....and dirty. After getting the interior shampoo'ed they were not able to get out the dark areas that were around/under the left rear edge of the mat plus the footrest. I need a mat that covers more of the floor and can keep the melted snow in it.

I live in Wisconsin and have to use the Mustang all year. the car's first two winters we had record-breaking snowfall - its a mess. So far, no snow or salt and its 12/2. I had the car detailed last week with a triple-coat polish and interior shampoo, plus several weeks earlier had pulled the wheels and cleaned the inside of the rims. So I'm about as protected as I can be - except for the floor mat. I need to get one by this weekend (light snow forecast) and I don't know what to get!

I'm hoping this can be my last winter in Wisconsin.

WeatherTech.com tub style mats are great. I have them in each vehicle. They fit perfect and collect slush, dirt, gravel, etc.

I bought the the genuine ford accessory ones from PartsCheap

From what I see, it has about 1/2 inch lip going around it. the rivets (the hexagonal pattern) aren't all that deep maybe 1/4 inch, but are fairly rugged. Plus the fit and finish is seamless and looks good.

Typically, if I'm ever going to get into my car after walking through a good amount of snow, I'll open the door, sit down and bang my feet together a few times together outside of the car, and then swing my feet back in. That way most of the snow is off, and the mats do a good job collecting the rest.

Drove the car in the white stuff for the first time saturday night. I must say the car road very well. I added extra weight in the trunk and had full tank of gas. I did nothing to the car (no snow tires, Chains etc). Compared to my 2008 Fx4 Ranger the car was alot better. A friend goes yeah but what are you going to do when you get stuck in the mustang. My answer don't get stuck.
FYI my car v6 2010 convert. autotragic. In all we had roughly 4-6". Suv's all over the place off the road. Saw a new charger stuck in a snow bank.

Surprisingly, I found a mat at the local Fleet Farm that appears to be pretty big - it goes way back behind the gas pedal and covers the whole width near the seat. I'll get the first chance to test it today as we're in the early stages of an 8-10" snow....

how much weight did you add in the trunk? What does the door sticker say as far as weight front and weight in the rear?

I drove my stock setup (19 inch all seasons) in a good 3-5 inches today (that continues to fall into a steady 10-12 inches...) The stuff was reallllllly heavy wet snow that came down in sheets. I had 120 lbs in my trunk...

Call me crazy... but I actually have my winter tires and rims setup but didn't want to put them on for this first big snow fall... Personally I wanted to compare the difference in my winter tire rim combo to that of stock. And to my surprise, it did really good. A few times it got a lil squirrely but honestly nothing I couldn't control- the car felt very stable. I'm sure I'll be even more impressed for when i put on my 17''' xice xi2's this Saturday.

I just don't like the Mustang in heavy snow. Today I drove it in the storm immediately followed by driving a smaller FWD GM car and there's a huge difference. I feel safer in the FWD. In the Mustang it took me forever to get off from a stoplight because it constantly felt like the car was on the verge of going out of control, fishtailing, unless I crawled up to speed. Nearly every time I tap the gas it feels like I'm going to lose it. But the FWd car drives like there isn't any snow on the road at all.

Somehow, I don't remember my Camaro being like this. I drove that for 2 winters before getting the Mustang. I like the Mustang - but driving it in any weather except snow.

I have found that a lot of how a car handles in the snow is what kind of snow you are talking about. The dry powdery snow is easy to drive in, the wet sloppy stuff is the kind that no Mustang likes.

just went through the commute in boston today, not really too bad except once off the highway in my office park complex a hill at a stop light that was not really plowed well, it climbed it but the traction control was flashing the whole way up. If i didnt have to stop for the light prolly would have been fine. I am running stock pirellis on the 19in rims nothing in the trunk. I think they were pretty decent considering the negative reviews of their winter performance.

it helps to take off in second gear sometimes. More controlled less tq to spin the tires. The traction control works great imo

I think I already posted a pic of my car ready for winter earlier in the thread, but here it is again just in case. Here's what it looked like in front of my driveway earlier this morning. My drive is on the right with the blue bmw in it.... good thing I shoveled and de-iced the night before, or Mr. bmw wouldn't have anywhere to go! The silver truck has all seasons (no seasons) and chains, the merc has all season off road posers, the land rover has hankook winter pikes , and the bmw has all seasons, but it's an xi. WTF! So with a wink, I asked my daughter if we should make them all believers in winter tires... pulled out of my garage in the supercharged bullitt, drove down between all the trucks that couldn't brake down the hill and my abs didn't even come on. I dropped my daughter at the bus stop and then drove back up the hill between the stuck trucks to find Mr. bmw parked in my drive blocking me from getting back in my garage. One person even asked me if the car was front wheel drive! Tried to educate them on the differences in tires, but even in situations like that where you would expect people to be receptive to learn, they just don't listen. So I just came inside and waited for the sand truck. Welcome to another winter in Bellingham.

110 KG -2 x 55kg weights off of my Uncle's Ford tractor. Laid them down under the spare and tightened the spare down. I actually drove 60 miles with them not in and anther 90 with them in (it was all ready snowing when I drove to the barn). About 4 inches prior and a total of 6 with them in.
The difference wasn't huge but as the tank emptied it helped.
I haven't looked at my sticker on the door. I'll look later and tell you.

I feel so left out... I live in California as well... Not far away from snow though. The most I ever have to worry about is probably 30 days of rain a year. It's pretty nice year round. :-)

Great read! Sounds like those blizzak's are doing their job! awesome tire from what I understand. It's crazy how little knowledge people have over their tires and how something with awd or suv setup- the common belif is that it'll be safer, better, and easier to drive. Tires infact make a hugeeee difference. I just put on my 17'' X-ice xi-2's, and am waiting (sadly) on some snowfall to test them out! For I drove in my stock setup, and it was a decent ride, but I figure the winter tires will be a night and day contrast from what I read on it...

Its 4x4, or studs, or not at all... in my area - as a career route driver with 5k'+ passes in every direction. FWD will work most of the time on passenger cars but because of black ice/ice under snow, its studs all around. My life is too priceless to trust to "studless rubber compounds"! LOLOL

And the Bullitt stays off the cinder coated roads till spring!

I was able to take my xice xi2's out last night / today. Last night here in the midwest we got 4-5 inches on the streets. Handled about to my expectations: the tires were able to dig a nice path into the snow, felt very assured, I went about 5-10 mph below the posted speed limits (as many cars were) and I feel they were a great choice. Very little tire spin off the line, traction control came on for about .5-1 sec for the tire to get traction, then it went fine. No fish tailing, or getting out of it's intended path (ie, turning, backing up, braking...) Braking was fine. As always took it easy, with a slow/steady applied brake and used engine braking when necessary. No problems at all.

Today: all that snow turned into a super wet/slushy road. Car did superb. No spin off the line, immediate traction. Turns were secure, braking was normal.

Overall these tires are working out great!
