no seriously they have to meet a certain fuel consumption number or get penalized, a lower gear like a 4.10 gear car is going to eat way more fuel than a 2.93 geared car for example.

Sorry Deysha, the manual GT convertible came with 3.31 gears as standard equipment from '11 through '14. The automatic GT convertible came with 3.15. The V6 convertible came with 2.73 regardless of transmission. No optional gear ratios were available on any convertible.

Now it may be plausible that shorter gears (3.55, 3.73, etc.) might possibly be a problem in a convertible - especially a V8 with the higher torque. But that wouldn't explain why 3.31 is acceptable with the higher torque V8 but not in a V6 with the same convertible body structure.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Couldn't be as simple as to keep reasonable MPG with the top down?

That plus the fact that convertibles weigh more (affecting fuel economy) could be a reason. But I don't think they are required to separate convertibles from coupes in their CAFE reporting. I know they don't publish separate EPA fuel economy numbers for convertibles - just overall V6/V8 with manual/automatic.

I think it is fuel economy combined with the prevailing opinion that people who buy convertibles are not as likely to be interested in performance... it's considered a "cruising" model. Same reason that the V6 Performance Package and the GT Track Package are not offered on 'verts.

So to answer the question, they seem to believe that convertible owners don't want fun. Case in point - I have the Brembo brake/suspension package, but couldn't go for the full track pack. Instead I have to seperately order the parts if I want them.
On the 2013MY they were not available for the V6 model, TheDivaDanielle. They were an option on the GTs. On the 2014MY, it’s not an option at all on either, and the GTs start at 3.55.

It’s just not designed for it, 211 Kona Blue. These gears have been only optional for manual transmissions. As I mentioned before, we separate certain packages to work with the type of vehicle. I know it’ll be great if we could order the vehicle exactly as we wanted it, but it would not be a smooth ride at the plant.

I certainly can understand that but I wonder why they separate packages with 3:55 or 3:73 gears on an automatic 5.0 but 5.0 manual its good and work

Unfortunately Deysha, your post conflicts directly with Ford's own published specs:

The note 1 next to the O (optional) under the V6 listings says "Only available with V6 Performance package (67B)" which is not available on convertibles.

So, according to Ford's Mustang Order Guides for 2013 and 2014, all V6 convertibles came with 2.73, GT with manual transmission came with 3.31, and GT with automatic came with 3.15. These were the same ratios that were available when I bought my 2011.
