One thing I love about all the GM's I have owned is the filters are straight up and down with nothing underneath them. I have to make a **** aluminum foil funnel on all my Ford's to avoid oiling everything up when I change the filter.

you must have only changed oil on a couple gm's then, because they are 2nd only to toyota for stupid oil filter placement

You ever change the oil on a new Tundra? LOL. Remove rock guard, remove little metal filter cap, stick plastic thingie into filter cap, draining the filter, remove filter cap, change filter media, replace filter cap, etc etc

It's in a place that's _generally_ accessible, but will likely get the new z-member dirty. It's partially hidden by the blue diagonal brace just forward of the wheel centerline.

Oil filter location is one thing I like about BMWs. Right up front and cartridge style so with a fluid evacuator you don't even need to get under the car to do an oil change.
Of course they get a lot of things wrong, like no LSD on anything but an M car and no dipstick with the current generation.

Worst oil filter location goes to the old FS-DE 2.0 motor in a ton of Mazdas. The filter itself is half the size of a soda can, and it's mounted about 2/3 of the way up between the firewall and the back side of the block, and on an angle so just about every wrench doesn't fit. No matter what you do, you spill oil on the half shaft and everything else around.

+1. Wife has a 2003 Protege5. The filter is high enough that you're just about up to your elbow from below, but can't get to it from above. If the engine has even a little heat in it, you're toast. Pun intended. There are some aftermarket filter relocation kits out there, but I haven't looked into it too seriously...
The newer 2.3 motors have the cartridge on the bottom, but it makes a heck of a mess when taking it out. I've thought about doing a spin-on conversion, but put it off when I decided to get rid of the car. I can suffer a few more oil changes.

The Worst
The Nissan Pickup I had back in 97. You literally had to weave your arms thru rods and other stuff. Had to go to it from the bottom up and gl getting a wrench in there.
The best
My Dad's 2006 V6 Tundra has it right up top. It even has a catch area for anything that may leak out while you're removing it.
