What kind of noise does a bad catalytic converter make?

Does anyone have a video or experience? I can't seem to find one and my mysterious knocking noise doesn't seem to be coming from the motor but from the cat.

I hit a rock in my old camaro and broke the 'brick' inside one- sounded like gravel in a can. look for a dent in the shell, if its dented, probably broken inside- its a ceramic honeycomb.

good luck getting those manifold bolts off- really thought i was gonna bust mine when doing my clutch...1/16 turn/screech,retighten, reoil, another 1/16th...took forever it seemed, made a oily mess(dont get oil in the cat pipe either- can screw up the 02 and/or clog the cat). they came out, but jeez...

rap gently on the pipes with a mallet- if its busted inside, youll hear it rattle or klunk

yikes!

hey, one thing- I found out after the fact on my old camaro, emissions equipment is required to be warrantied for 5 yrs.

the video sounds more like a mechanical rod knock or something- hopefully not, but I dunno about a cat making that kind of racket...

Well the noise is louder by the cat. That's the only thing making me think that it is the cat and not a rod. The rattle continues for a second when I turn the car off it. It will rattle a second while the car turns of from the last vibrations of the motor if that makes sense

Emission control and emission related parts are covered for the first 2 years or 24,000
miles of vehicle use (whichever first occurs); and
• Specified major emission control components are covered for the first 8 years or 80,000
miles of vehicle use (whichever first occurs).
According to federal law, an emission control or emission related part, or a specified major
emission control component, that fails because of a defect in materials or workmanship, must
be repaired or replaced by the vehicle manufacturer free of charge as long as the vehicle has not
exceeded the warranty time or mileage limitations for the failed part.
However, if it was damaged, it's on your dime. The cats are usually covered for 8 years or 80k. per the EPA, if you are in a state that requires emission testing. It should also pop a CEL as well.

Usually a defect involves a clogged cat, which can sometimes cause it to break up, but it will usually throw a CEL long before that happens.

They can make no noise at all when they go bad...had one that was silent but failed emissions badly.

And I had another that only rattled when you revved it up because something metal inside were rattling around in there. It sounded like yours, only less pronounced and only when I put it to greater than 3/4 throttle.

It might just be an exhaust clamp rattling, or missing - he said hopefully - because if you're not under warranty, Cats aren't cheap!

I think the next step is to see Ford if you're under warranty, or a muffler shop if you're not.

Just because he had it tuned doesn't mean your warranty is screwed. I would take it into a dealership and let them look at it. Worst case scenario, they tell you what's wrong with it and if they tell you your warranty won't cover it, you'll at least know what to fix. They won't charge you if you don't have them do the repair.

It's actually 8 yrs for emission related components.

That's usually an indicator of a clogged cat. One of my family members had their Fiesta in 3 times for clogged cats within the first three years of ownership. It would pop a CEL.

What the OP is talking about with the noise is the ceramic pieces inside the cat have blown themselves to shreds and are rattling around, which can often still be covered under warranty as long as there is no visible damage inflicted.
