What the heck is this sound!!!

My 2011 GT just started making this noise today and it appears to come from both front wheels. I drove around testing to try to figure it out, I would get up to 30 mph start coasting and would hear it, would shift into neutral and coast and hear it, I even shifted into neutral and shut off the engine and coasted and could hear it. the last day or so I thought I could smell burnt rubber or plastic, you know that hot smell when something isn't right but it would go away,

I got the front jacked up and spun the tires and can't hear anything, but I realize the suspension isn't loaded at that point so that might be something.

When it was on the ground I looked all in the wheel wells and felt around and could find no signs of any tire rubbing and the rims clear the brakes and everything fine.

I am taking it to the dealership hopefully tomorrow or as soon as I can. But I wanted to see what you guys think.

Check to make sure the lugs are properly torqued and tire pressure is good. Sounds like a wet sneaker on a waxed floor......

Do you have any vibration? Are the wheels hubcentric or do they have rings? If so make sure they're seated properly. The wheels could be rubbing on the inside where you can't see or feel. Just some things to check.

I had the car up to 110 the other day and things were fairly smooth, no shaking in the steering wheel just a bit of vibration in the car but the road isn't the best. What do you mean by hubcentric or having rings, not sure what that means?

You might also want to inspect the wheel ribs for cracks, and visually inspect the wheel bearing seals for signs of overheating if at all possible.

Hmm... I doubt that would be it if you were running the car that fast without issue. But if you took one of your wheels off and looked at the back of it where it mounts to the hub of the car you'll either see what looks like a big ring in the center, if not then the wheels are made to fit around the hub of your vehicle. Sorry for the crappy explanation but I can't really find any good diagrams. I'll keep looking though.

Here's a decent diagram and explanation. Hope this helps.

You mean that clicking sound, atleast that's what I heard,on the video?
Could be the wheel center caps moving around....are they loose?
Try installing the stock front wheels,to see if the noise goes away.

Lol, hub rings aren't the same as center caps, they actually hold the wheel center on the hub.

I popped the center caps off and the hub isn't a tight fit in the wheel bore but the gap is smaller than 1/8th of an inch I could barely get a flat head screwdriver tip in the gap so I don't think there is an issue there. The wheels look centered and the lugs are tight

Dropped it off at the dealership, cross your fingers they figure it out and don't blame it on the aftermarket rims

Well it is the rim and tire. It actually is only the front left rim. But apparently what is going on is the chrome lip on the front wheel is a separate chrome piece of melt that they put in the rim. And the guy at the tire shop and I noticed that if we press on it in a few places it makes a squeaking noise, and I checked the other rims and they don't do that.

So with the vehicle weight on the tire and when moving the pressure from the tire against the lip is flexing that chrome piece and making it squeak. I tested it by driving in a parking lot by turning right and driving in a circle and with the reduced weight on the left hand side of the car it stopped making a noise, as SOON as I start to straighten out SQUEEAK SQUEEAK SQUEEAK.

I have 265/35 20 tires on the rims and the rims are 8.5" wide. I could see that wide of a tire on that rim, the tire was rolling around the lip and putting pressure right on it and I think that may have caused that chrome piece to come loose over the last 1000 miles I have had them on the car.

I called Concept One the manufacturer of the rim and they recommend a 245 or 255 with that rim and not the 265. So I am ordering 2 new 255/35/ 20's which will match well with my 295/30 20's in the back and I am getting a new rim. And hopefully the less wider tire wont affect the new rim and my other front one and the squeak will go away.

If not then I will have learned a $2000 dollar lesson and the stock rims will go back on And I will have some expensive boat anchors sitting in the garage. At least I could sell the tires to recoup some of the money. ./facepalm

Hmm good point.

I would still try to get the manufacturer to replace the wheel. The wheel should never have parts coming loose on it. That just screams poor quality.
