Sunshade on glass roof broke, need advice please

Hi guys, I hope someone out there has some good advice. I have a 2010 GT with the glass roof option. I took the car out last week for a drive and tried opening the sunshade and I heard a crack and then the shade got dislodged from the track. I called a couple of dealerships and two out of the three were little to no help in offering any advice on how to fix it. One in particular had no idea that mustangs even had that option. The dealership I bought my car from said that the part is $700.00 and that it would take four to five hours to fix. My question is, has anyone out there with this option experienced the shade coming off the track and what the total price was to fix this? My warranty has been up for a little over a year and I love my car and just want to be able to enjoy my roof again.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

HEres the part .. you can find it cheaper online if you are looking to do it yourself

I never shut mine so I don't have to worry about it breaking.

Same here. But try White Bear Ford...they offer discounts on Ford parts.

Thanks for the replies, does anyone know of a good dealer in the Charleston SC area who can do a good repair job? Funny you guys mention always leaving your's open. I usually do that and was showing a friend the roof a couple of weeks ago and closed the thing because he wanted to see what the cabin looked like with it closed and that was all it took. I just don't want the dealer scratching/denting up my car when they are doing the work. Can anyone out there chime in who has been down this road before on what their experience was like at the dealership?

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Did you do a search? I remember a thread about this a couple years ago. It seemed to be a somewhat common occurrence. Mine already sags a little if I close it, but my car is in a parking garage during the day, and I almost never drive with the sun over my head, so I 99.9% of the time have the shade open. I also had my GR tinted as well, so that helps with the heat if it's sunny.

I think I've only ever closed mine on two occasions (both just because a passenger wanted to see what it looked like closed ).

If it were me, I would be tempted to (carefully) take a razor and simply remove the shade...

Just wanted to update my thread, I took my car into the dealership I originally bought my car from and had my sunshade fixed. They did a great job, if anyone in the Charleston SC area needs to have service work done I would strongly recommend Summerville Ford. While I was waiting I got a chance to drive a 15 GT and it was nice, Not nice enough to make me want another car payment, but nice.

The sunshade cost after taxes $700.00. Labor was another $400.00, so total was in the $1,100.00 ballpark range. I also had an oil change and tire rotation thrown in. Still pricey though, but I watched the guy most of the time working on it and it seemed like it was a little labor intensive. He worked on it from 8 am till around noon nonstop. It would not be a job I would feel comfortable with doing myself for sure. It works flawlessly now though.

I'm in a way glad that I didn't get the glass rooftop. I would be PISSED if I spent 2k on this option only to find out that I'd have to leave it either open or close to avoid breaking it. That's just silly.

btw OP, since you watched the tech work on it, what was the procedure to replace this? I'm assuming he had to remove the headliner, right?

Yeah, it was very expensive to fix and I was pissed about the price especially since I only have opened the shade a few times since I have owned my mustang. But it was either fix it or cut the screen out and with living in the south especially during the summer that was not an option. The tech had to remove the headliner and top console piece as well as the visors. He then took out the screws holding the screen in place and removed the old screen. I could only watch from the service lobby but he had another guy helping him and he did not seem happy doing the work. After the car was done before I paid the service department I went out and checked out the interior to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be. I had Ford customer service tracking this repair work since I got so many weird answers from dealerships regarding this kind of repair. But Summerville Ford did do a good job and at least the work and screen are now under warranty for two years.

Yeah a very expensive repair
In case this happens to anyone else, I suppose you could always get 5% limo tint on just the glass roof for less than $100 from somewhere. You might lose a lot of the effect of the glass roof though.

Yeah, I thought of that one too, but the roof is already tinted and I really did not want to go with making it darker. Good tip though for those wanting to bypass the extra expensive route.
