Blue Oval News/StangsUnleashed has been talking about one for three years now. We know the 5.0L is coming; it's not hard to imagine the Boss name being attached to a car.
Why not, back when Ford had a quick and adept product development cycle, they brought out the original Boss 302 contemporaneously with the '69 restyle. The '10 is but a reskin of the current platform with some inevitable but likely minor tweaks, and the 5.0 sounds like but an offshoot development of the decade and a half old Mod motor. Basically, the restyle should have happened for '08 and the Boss 5.0 should have been out as an "06 follow on to the '05 intro, if not rolled out in '05 itself. Sadly, that sort of active, efficient and aggressive product development process is something Ford, fat and complacent having gorged on easy SUV sales, seems totally incapable of.
Now that we're so inured to convoluted and drawn out development cycles, we feel glad if a special edition model makes it to the street within 3-4 years of a model line intro. Today, Ford makes an ashtray redesign seem like an endeavor comparable to constructing the great pyramids of Egypt. And then when whatever said major development project finally, fitfully dribbles into reality -- say, as in the Boss motor project -- the market reality has so changed from the original conception that they're forced into some contorted, time consuming and expensive rejiggering of the whole thing. Now Ford is caught flat-footed with a fleet bloated with obese and gluttonous SUVs and pickups they can't give away causing a 28% plummet in already weak sales and competitive new products, as always, somewhere on the horizon.
Anyways, off the soap box. Hopefully Ford, out of character, does this right and not only fullfills what are now modest expectations, but rather, surprisingly exceeds them, i.e., 400+hp, six speed tranny, IRS, real brakes, interior materials more than a mere step above a Yugo's, and a reasonable price. Make it truly a world class working man's M3, not some constricted muscle car relying on cheap price and pining nostalgia for days past.

Sounds very plausible to me - the 5.0L engine coupled with special Boss graphics, paint, suspension and brakes to create a Boss 302 Mustang in '10 and then as you suggest the 5.0L engine becomes the standard powerplant for the GT in '11 sans the other options and maybe with a few less ponies. When can I place my order?

Am I the only one that noticed the last paragraph:
I thought Job 1 on the redesign was going to be in Feb of 09 or something along those lines. Shouldn't this be showing up in Detroit in Jan of 09???? I mean what significant US shows are in the summer?
"with the updated 2010 Mustang making its debut sometime in the summer of 2009"
Lots of variables here. Other plausible scenarios? With the down-turn in F150 sales Ford may fear they will have excess production of the upcoming rwd version of the 3.5L GTDi V6 in coming years. Given this, the Mustang would likely seem like a great place to deposit at least some of those 3.5L GTDi V6 engines, and they could be using a 5.0L, V8 powered SE Boss V8 in 2010 to test the plausibility of replacing the V8-powered GT with a Boss model which, if successful, would allow them to move the GT over to the 3.5L GTDi V6. And before somebody says never.....far stranger things have happened.
Of course, it could all be hype and the guys over on Stangnet may be completely off their collective nut.

If anything I could see the power numbers being the same..
Saves them the money engineering anything different enginewise.
The only reason why there would be a SE stang in 2010 with a 5.0 or whatever...is to get numbers out for the 5.0, until it went primetime (GT) in 2011.
Limited supply of engines, allow the car not to be upstaged powerwise by the Camaro, and give some collectors a cool car.
If they do this at all of course.

Ask 2001 Cobra/Mach1 owners
I know i know, not exactly the same
What about 2010 and 2011 mustang GT owners getting different engines?
Ok slightly different...
But who's to say that the look and other goodies won't be sightly different?
Or just throwing it out there, if the 5.0 is tuned slightly different (ie: 91 octane)
for a slight power bump/curve? (like you mentioned above)

Good points. I think in order to be unique and not just a sticker package they'll need a little more hp. 20 should be enough. And some suspension upgrades. My fear is that they turn the Boss 302 into a GT/CS.
Yeah, a tape/stripe package would be a no-no.
I'm pretty sure out of all the names/badges... ford would not screw around with the Boss moniker.
Truth be told, I'm sure we would have had one in this gen (or even the last gen..remember the 04 was suppose to be a boss at one point...but they just extended the Mach1) but they couldn't find the right mix of parts.
If we do get a BOSS, I bet it will be unique enough...
but I wouldn't look for anything crazy.
The parts are out there anyway.
Look... easy enough...
Power... 5.0L-premium tune, 6 speed, 3.73s gears (from the bullitt)
GT500 brakes, strut brace, wheels, suspension.
ALL doable with limited budget.
