Is a radar detector a good investment?

I'd check locally if they are legal. Even if they are, I'd bet that police would take a dim view if they figured it out and find something else to write you for. IMHO.

I have three Escort detectors currently. One 20 years old, one ten and the x50 is a few years old. One ticket in 20 years, saved me many times. I don't excessively speed but I push the limits. The one ticket I had was passing a car doing 83. I don't understand the law that says you can't speed while passing in NY.

Im looking at the 9500ix. Gotta love the GPS ability to mark known speed traps and speeding cameras. I will probably get this as soon as I get the car. I am not saying I will speed excessively or constantly, but come on, why the hell else would you get a 300-400 HP sports car?

If you have to exceed the speed limit to pass another car in the available space and time then the pass should not be made.
We all know the real world though.

don't buy a measly detector at like radio shack, buy something of value.
Calibre K-40 system is amazing. Picks up every hint of a radar, and jams the lasers so the gun reads back an error. You mount them in the rear and front, remote clicker controls it, and it gets built right into your dash unit. It's far worth the price.

If you really want to go ***** out, get yourself a custom installed detector/jammer and have it integrated into the dash. That'll set you back $1500 or so, but you'll have total control of protecting yourself.

It's not like I'm doing 100+ mph every time I drive the car, it's more for those times when I get distracted at 10 miles above the limit and an occasional road trip. My idea was to go for a good detector (9500ix seems to be one of the best options), or just to keep being careful. But the issue is that roads are full of these things, and with the Cherokee it was easier, but the Mustang... is a different story...
Thanks everyone for your contributions.

Good strategy. Ever leave town???
I drive all over the U.S. and there are some REALLY SNEAKY LEOs out there. I'm usually 5-10 MPH over the limit. Maybe 10-12 on the interstate or school zones.
(I posted the school zone thing just to see if anyone was actually reading... I don't speed in school zones. Period.)

Oh and in Pennsylvania everyone slows down in school zones, including myself. In NY no one does.
