The Protectors-Environmental Package?

Hello all,
I picked up my pony last night and the dealership tried to sell me the Environmental package called the "Protector," which supposedly protects paint and dampens sound for $900. I told him that I would think about it. Does anyone have any reviews or recommendations? Should I get it or is it a rip off?

in my experience anything extra the dealership tries to sell you like this is a rip off...
they sold my mother a protectant package for $170 and what she got was 4 little bottles of cleaner wax, polish, wax and a detail mist from a company i never heard of..... i told her i could have gotten all that stuff for $20 at the local store....
waste of time....

Yeah, they make a ton of money on all of that stuff...most expensive wax job ever....plus the finance guy that usually pushes that stuff on you makes a ton on commissions if he sells you the stuff....

I've always passed on that type of dealer stuff. Huge markup by the dealer to make an extra buck.

Yeah, I let them talk me into the wheel/tire insurance and the glass protection package but they discounted it a bunch from the original price. The wheel/tire deal was about $900 and they came down to about $150 and the glass deal was like $600 and came down to about $120.

The glass deal replaces the windshield if it ever gets cracked or if it gets a chip and is supposed to have a permanent rain-x type coating. The coating is for crap, doesn't shed water hardly at all.

The wheel/tire insurance covers any wheels/tires on the car, oem or aftermarket, and replaces them if damaged.

Overall, both packages only raised the payment by $4 a month and covers the car for the term of the financing so I caved and let them do it. No way I would have done it for the original price though, no way it would have been worth the original $1500 price.

The mark up is huge for this stuff so if you do it just don't pay more than about 20 percent of the original price. Paint protection and sound deadening sounds like wax and some undercoating to me though, don't think I would take it for more than about $100-$125.

For what I ended up paying on mine though, I didn't feel like I got raped, just molested a little...

I agree with the above statements on buying no extras at all. I opted out of that VIN etch that is often automatically built in. I can't see how it offers any benefit.

Ltngdrvr - did you get in writing that the wheel coverage covers any wheels on the car? That sounds a bit too good to be true

I think a good wax, and a little elbow grease will do the same thing. And for a lot cheaper.

Thanks for the advice. Doesn't it come with it already waxed?

Spark you should be getting your car soon. I bet you are stoked!!

I got an extended warranty for the engine/transmission out to 7 years/75K miles so I wouldn't have to worry about it for the long haul. Less than $1K so it made sense since I'm pretty hard on my car. Not through a 3rd party but through Ford.

It will bead water when new. But, I always put a good wax job on mine just to make me feel better. As they say "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure".

BTW, it's the 20th. I hope you have that beauty in your driveway today.
