Opinions on Engine Braking / Downshifting?
#21
Thousands of Semi drivers ford f150 drivers focus drivers mustang chevy 350 ect ect. You name it there has been thousands of incidents almost all of them are manual drivers downshifting downhill. I just had a guy bring one in Tuesday on a chevy 350 and last week on a focus. Its entirely possible common sense dictates not to slam the needle but people it only takes once.

Always downshift to help slow me down. Rev match when driving more aggressively or to hear that sweet exhaust and ze burble.
on ocassion if I'm tired ill just put it in neutral and use the brakes.

Depends of how fast I'm going. If I'm coming to a red light from 20mph, I'll just put it in neutral and hit the brakes. But stopping from say 60mph, yeah I might kick it down to 5th, 3rd then neutral as I'm applying light brakes. A little bit of engine braking to help the brakes.
But you have to rev-match, or at least not do any drastic downshifts. That will just wear your clutch out.

I don't downshift when coming to a complete stop - brakes are way cheaper than a clutch to replace. I downshift plenty in regular driving though, especially when I'm out on country roads heel-toeing.
