While I changed many a quart of oil when I was younger, I find that I have difficulty moving the next day now after climbing underneath a car. I am 50 yrs old, have some arthritis and of course I am also WAY out of shape and about 100 lbs overweight (aka, old fat guy) . I take my Stang to the dealership. We are still enjoying the freebie oil changes too though. Part of the deal when we bought her.

Back in the day, I was a big Mobil 1 fan and when I got my then new 98 Chevy 4x4 truck and my ex-wife's 98 Grand Prix GT I switched both vehicles over to it. Soon after that my truck developed a ticking noise in the engine and the engine in my ex-wife's car was noisier as well but no ticking sound.

I had the dealer check out the truck and they said nothing was wrong. I continued to run this oil for quite a while in both vehicles and started doing oil analysis on both before the 36 month warranty was about to be over to determine if I was going to be able to extend my oil change intervals from 3,000 miles to 5,000 miles. Analysis results came back on both vehicles with some of the wear levels at higher than average levels and the recommendation to stay at 3,000 mile intervals.

I decided to go back to conventional oil in both vehicles as I was tired of hearing the ticking of my engine and I didn't feel I was getting my money's worth if I was still going to have to change every 3,000 miles. I also was having more oil consumption using Mobil 1 than when I had been running conventional oil and it decreased when I went back to a conventional. My opinion was that Mobil 1 was just too thin for my applications. I'm sure it would have still protected the engine fine but it just wasn't cost effective in my opinion.

I continued to do oil analysis with the conventional oil and my wear metals improved and the ticking in my truck went away and the engine in my ex-wife's GP was also quieter. Blackstone Labs also recommended going up to 4-5,000 mile oil change intervals with the new oil.

I never tried any other synthetic because I was getting good results with the conventional oil and didn't see a reason to change.

I still own my 98 chevy truck and it now has 125,000 miles on it and it still does not "tick" while running and still runs like new.

I am thinking about trying a synthetic again in my new Mustang though.
