Normal Coolant Level?

Hey guys,

I'm a bit embarrassed to say this, but I've never really bothered looking at my coolant level to date and when I was checking the car over the other night with the engine cold, I saw that there was just barely any coolant in the reservoir. When hot, tonight, there was about 1" of coolant in the reservoir.

Question is - is that the normal level or do I need to add some coolant? I bought a gallon of orange concentrated Motorcraft stuff at the dealer tonight for $18, just in case.

Look at the reservoir and you'll see the cold fill line near the top portion of the bottle. When engine is cold fill to this mark. You can use the coolant mix or just top it off with distilled water.

I understand that...I'm just wondering what other guys' cars that haven't had a coolant flush or any coolant added look like as far as level.

Mine only has around 4500 on it and it is still between the cold fill lines when cold.
Hope that helps

Your car is always going to have the level decrease with time. Ill be a doucher and say you cant be serious, can you? Come on man!

Ha. I think that's my first dumb question on here; at least I didn't ask about transmission problems or what is the best aftermarket exhaust

In all fairness, that statement may not necessarily be true in all cases. I bought a new GT in 2007. It endured a fairly rip-roaring life and never did it suffer a coolant level drop or require any top-offs during its first 5 years and 26,000 miles of ownership. It was sold in 2012 and the coolant appeared to be the same clean yellow color it was from the factory. One in a million? Possibly. But, my post is factual.
