I don't know if they went back to the drawing board. It still sounds like the same design. Should ask someone who was at the focus group eons ago if its the same or different.
I'm 99% certain from the information i read is they did make changes because everyone would say they ripped off gm even though the stang was designed first.

Again I'm not saying they scraped the entire thing and did a complete new one but suggnificant enough to not look so similar.

The Camaro and Challenger concepts were shown in January 2006 Detroit auto show. The design for the 2010 Mustang was chosen and "locked in" Sept. 2005. I know someone who has seen the original sketches and clay models in Sept. '05 and the new 2010 car at the dealer prevue and they are the same design.

Other than the Mustang, Camaro, Challenger ( and Charger ) all having some version of "hips" ( a popular design feature in the 60s anyway ) there is really nothing similar about the Camaro and Mustang designs, anyway. Remember, the 2010 is using the same roof/windows as todays so the only stuff being changed is below the windows ( which explains why the camo is not on the rear windows/roof area. ) The Camaro is much more of a notchback ( like Fox body LX ) look, while the 2005-10 Mustang roof is more of a fastback look. That's a big difference already, I don't see why people would say one copied the other.

They have the same overall look to the public.
Infact I can tell you how many non car people I have heard mention 'is that the new mustang' when looking at the camaro concept.

I think the Mustang will have the edge in this battle... with numbers of devoted people and people who buy a mustang for the name (whether v6 or up to shelby)

The Camaro was around for 3 autoshow seasons, and because its SO close to its concept, its already dated (especially for people who follow cars) it might seem stale in the eyes of the public.

The mustang from time shown till purchase will be well under a year.
It sucks for us who are waiting to see it, but sounds like they want to blitz it.
It's working too... we want to see more...are chomping at the bit...

When it comes to styling, Ford has always been fairly conservative. I hope they didn't back down to GM's offering. They need to keep a competitive edge.

Ok, you got me there. I was thinking more '02 Mustang vs. '02 Camaro. I always thought the F-body was overdone; too many curves.

I am actually impressed with the fact that both the Challenger & Camaro resemble the prototypes. I am worried that the Mustang is going to look "dated" - even with the refresh.

I'd have to wait until I see more pics and details before commenting on the new model. I would be really interested to see if they will improved the interior.

Was out the other day with my 01 Mustang GT, ended up next to a last generation Camaro. IMHO the 99 New edge Mustang styling holds up a lot better today than the last Camaro.

Personally..
I think the 94-98s look old...like dated.
The 99-04s are holding, but starting to show age.
The 05-09s still look brand new and turn heads... might hold their look better than the previous 2 gens. We'll have to wait and see waht the future holds though when the 2010 is around for 3 or so years.

I was just looking in the latest Car and Driver (they had a review of the GT500KR) and they also had both other new Pony cars in articles. I was looking for the article on the Camaro (a design I just can NOT get into) - I spot an in-motion sidepic of this black beautiful sucker and was like "Man that looks AWESOME when its driving... maybe I was wrong...."

Then I look closer and realize I am looking at the Challenger........

I STILL think the Camaro is a bit 'confused' and not sure exactly how it is supposed to look, as the design does not hold together 100% for me.....

I am with you, man

I always liked the 99-04s better but over the past year or more, the 94-98s especially lowered with fatter tires are REALLY starting to get me....

okay.......that's what I was talking about!! As these younger guy's are taking the stock one's and lowering them and more meat under them.....they are not looking so old anymore.

Point to remember: "Just wait your old Mustang WILL look new again"

Sorry to get off topic......it's just starting to get boring with no new 2010 pics to love or hate!!

At certain angles the new Camaro looks very good & mean. I saw spy pictures of a black one, and it reminded me of Darth Vader-lol
At other angles, I think the car looks odd. I like the looks of the Challenger SRT8.

Both cars have a wide looking stance, and hate to say it "Bold" designs. That's why I fear the Mustang may look "dated".

As for older Mustangs? I think the SVT Cobra's still look very nice. The 99-04 Mustang GT's are nice, but like Boomer pointed out, they are starting to show their age.
I still think all 94-04 Mustang GT Convertibles are sharp rides!

Never really liked post 1980 Firebirds or Camaro's. This 2010 Camaro is the only Camaro I have even considered looking at.

It's funny your guys are talking about this as I have been feeling this way for a while now. I always loved the 99-04's though recently I have been seeing more and more of them and love them just as much. Today on lunch though I saw a 94-98 GT vert, stock tan top, tan leather interior in this dark metallic red with chrome 16' bullits. The car looked so amazing. I think it's because I see mine so much that the current body style is common place to me (though other still tell me how much they love it). Not to say I don't love it too, because I do it's just nice to see some of the older ones that are well taken care of, gives you an appreciation for them.

I think "well taken care of" is the difference. There's a few SN95s in my area that are really nice and well taken care of, that I wouldn't mind owning.

On the other hand, If I see a ratty looking Mustang (S197 included) I feel sorry for the car, and feel the owner should be beaten mercilessly; then jailed in a Turkish prison for Mustang neglect.
