Question Need help Replacing Fuel Pump On 2013 GT

New to the forum, but a long time Ford fan. I have a 2013 GT convertible and thought changing the fuel pump would be a simple job. Sure looks easy in the videos online, but all of them I’ve seen are 2010 or older s197 cars. The locking ring on my 2013 is much larger than the ring on earlier cars. I was able to fabricate a removal tool to get it loose, but to my surprise, the ring won’t fit through the access hole to remove it. Doesn’t seem like there is room to slide it out of the way either. Hoping there is a simple solution here. Thanks.

Ok, this had me wondering... and look at that wouldya:

2015-20 lock ring

2011-14 lock ring (Yours)

2007-2010 lock ring

2005-2006 lock ring (mine)

So. The '05-06 and '07-10 rings, while similar, have different part numbers and ostensibly are different in some way... but they're obviously sized correctly for the hole in question.

The '11-14 and '15-20 rings, again while similar, also have different part numbers so there's something different to them too. But you can see in the pictures it certainly looks like they've apparently added some circumferential material around the outside and that's causing the '05-14 sized hole in the floor pan to not clear, being they didn't change that to go with. Videos seem to indicate they fixed this faux pas on the '15+, so dangit so much right?

This just confused me... Surely you wouldn't do that, would you, Ford...? I therefore went looking, found, and downloaded a 2014 Mustang manual and had a look (13-14 should be the same). And in the manual it says 'drop the tank' to get those senders out.

Yeah. Looks like you're dropping the tank on the '11-14s. Because Ford decided to change the lock ring and not fix the pan to match.

I just... I don't even. Ford, you really tick me off sometimes. Consistency. You don't have it.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but I do hope it helps anyway. And if you want that manual, you can use the words "2014 Mustang Manual Online Free PDFs" in some order and use the link that you find that has 'Free PDFs' on it, and the domain starts with 'card...' (Note: I don't normally recommend such a vague type of thing, but I don't wanna step on toes, if you will, and I know it works, because I just did it. It's a nifty manual setup, really. BUT STILL. THE INTERNET IS OUT TO KILL YOU ALMOST LITERALLY SPEAKING, so care beful and ware be, trust nobody, not me, not yourself, and even the doggo looks suspicious sometimes...)

Or not. You can certainly buy one, I'd be ok with that too, just something I thought I'd throw out there for ya...

Also what I'll throw out is this: Dremel and a cutting wheel can do wonders, and I bet you could get the '15+ rubber cover(s) outta a junk yard and make 'em work... maybe... I dunno... but a thought nonetheless...

Overall, I'm bettin' that's not what you wanted to hear, but I still hope it helps, and welcome to the forums! Good luck!

Thumbs up

Boy, thanks for the research and for confirming my worst fears. I had already considered going the dremel route if necessary. I think about 1/4 inch indent 180 degrees apart should do it. Probably wouldn’t even be noticeable with the cover back in place. Hard to believe Ford would drop the ball like that. Thanks again.
