Mustangs have always had Fake Scoops.

The side scoops don't "hinder performance". They're so light as to not make a difference, and the way air flows around the body, the scoops don't stick out enough to have any tangible impact on aerodynamics. The same goes for most hood scoops. To take advantage of the air coming up over the hood (or to "hinder performance"), the scoop openings almost have to be right AT the leading edge of the hood and be too tall to look decent. Again, the added weight of a hood scoop is going to have no impact on top speed.
If you want to talk about "pointless", let's talk about the back seat, or the two-piece drive shaft.
