Mustangs have always had Fake Scoops.

Interesting tidbit... I had a 94 GT new and the vents/scoops in front of the rear wheels were actually fucntional. The grills in them were open (honeycomb pattern had holes not sealed off), and there was a rectangle shaped louver inside the wheel well connected to the side scoops that forced the air upward into the wheel well, in front of the rear tires. I noticed in 95 that ford closed these off, replacing the inserts in the scoops with a solid grill, must have been a cost saving measure.

You did not specify a price range, so I'll assume you're looking at a particular price range?
Remember, if you find a set used, most likely they will not be your color, so having them painted (unless you have your own paint booth type arrangements) will add to the price before they get to the "install" point. There are risks of buying used...poor paint, hairline cracks in the paint, hiden damage when the previous owner removed them, etc.
Buy new, you get a warranty. Buy used, no warranty.

If you are going to do this do it the right way and buy the Shaker hood scoop or aftermarket hood with one built in. Don't buy the Ford crap that looks like it came from your local PepBoys.

Care to show me a 64 Mustang with a factory fake scoop?
In fact, I'm having a really hard time trying to think of any year Mustang that did have a fake hood scoop prior to the Mustang IIs.

I'm still trying to understand why the thread was titled as such; was it a preemptive strike against people telling him the fake scoops look like garbage? If so, have to say...just because some, even most, mustang models have appearance-only side and hood scoops doesn't mean they're any better than if his car was the only one that has them. Looks for the sake of looks that actually hinder performance in any way is always a bad idea. Scoops included. Pointless.

My 1st car was a 1971 Mach I with the 351 2 barrel. It didn't have the Ram Air induction but the hood still had the 2 non-functional scoops.

1967-68 Shelby - non-functional side scoops (both quarter window and side scoops)
1967/68 Mustangs even had non-function heat extractors in the hoods (used to house concealed turn signals).
1969 Mustang - non-functional bold-on hood scoop (351W cars), non-function rear quarter scoops (all '69s). On Shelbys, the rear scoops were obviously glued on and looked like crap
1970 Mustang - side-scoops removed, but front headlight buckets included non-functional brake-cooling scoops outboard of headlights
1971-72 - the "Ram Air hood was available with functional and non functional NACA ducts.
1973-79 - Cobras (and non-Cobras) had non-functional hood scoops
1980-present - Non-functional hood scoops
I realize there were 1964-1/2 cars, but for the sake of the argument I consider them to be rolled in with the 1965 model year.
And in the interest of completeness, I don't count the Mustang prototype (the little 2-seater with a 4cyl motor and adjustable pedals) because it was not a production car (it had radiators cooled through side ducts in front of the rear wheels).
So, every model year of Mustang has been available with non-functional scoops in one form or another. If you wanted to be pedantic, you could even claim that the Mustang's very bodywork implied a scoop where non existed, just in front of the rear wheel, and this applies to most of the versions with the possible exception of 1969-72 and the Fox body cars.

And to be even more pedantic, the scoops aren't fake - they're "non-functional".

If you want the side scoops, go ahead and add them. Nobody else's opinion matters except yours. I have 'em on my car, but they're from 3D Carbon and I don't like the Vinyl faux grille applique they use. I believe the OEM ones have a grille insert in them which looks 1000% better.

Still, not a fan of fake scoops. Not saying you shouldn't do it, its your car you paid for it. As far as I'm concerned you could paint it baby turd green with pink accents and put wings scoops and those little fender vents from AutoZone on it while you're at it. I might point and laugh at your car as you drive by but I won't tell you that you can't do it.

If you want to talk about "pointless", let's talk about the back seat, or the two-piece drive shaft.
