MT82: Anyone else have a sense of impending doom?
Not to pick on you, but your statement fits my comment. Yes the transmission is manufactured in China, but it is designed in Germany by Getrag. I'm sure everyone realizes the iPhone has parts manufactured all over the world including China. Do we blame China when the iPhone or iPod has issues? No Apple gets blamed for it. Yes, if it ends up being a materials quality control issue I ave no problem blaming China, but if this is an actual design flaw will we actually see Getrag and German engineering get blamed? Probably not.

Just like in the US, there are good factories and bad factories in China. The bad factories in China are usually those that are trying to make knockoff goods at the lowest possible production price. They tend to be Chinese-owned but not always.
Then you have high quality factories like the ones making a lot of Apple and other tech products, and Getrag's transmission factory.
I don't get why so many people tend to hold American manufacturing to an unwaivering high standard of quality. Yes, a lot of what we produce is good stuff, but you also have a lot of crap where the "MADE IN USA" stamp just means drunk Bubba on some filthy production line half-assed put something together.
Like with any product, do your research. It doesn't matter near as much where it's made, but it darn sure does matter HOW it's made!

Ugh, this thread makes me want to kick puppies. Please note this isn't directed to the OP or anyone in particular, more a of a general reaction to things I've read here and the freaking Spanish Inquisition over at AFM.
I saw a report on the news last night that this country consumes 80% of all painkillers/antidepressants in the world! Disproportionate much?
Sure there are people with real, serious problems. But there are also people imagining things that don't exist, or grossly exaggerating the problem.
I bet half the people *****ing about MT-82 "grinding" just mean it's a little rough. Big difference.
Some are also whining that shift effort is worse when it's cold and it's hard to get into reverse. A lot of these people probably haven't even owned a manual before, but only some admit to that. These people should go buy an Acura TSX immediately. You can't expect a 412-HP car to shift like a very forgiving Civic.
My Subaru's clutch/transmission sucks. Its a 2004 model, but the design goes back to the early 80s, before I was born! The clutch is a high-effort spring type, the transmission varies literally from shift-to-shift, minute-to-minute. Sometimes it engages with notchiness and a clunk, sometimes it just glides into the gate with a rubbery feel. It's impossible to get into 1st unless you're at a stop, and reverse actually IS difficult to engage. It's behaved this way since new. In short, it shifts like an International Harvester.
I test-drove a 2011 328i Coupe 6MT and a 2011 GT back-to-back. It was like being in heaven by comparison. I am sorry for those who have genuine problems with their MT-82s, but people need to quit *****ing otherwise, especially if they haven't owned/driven a manual transmission for any length of time. I hope I don't have any problems with my 2012 MT-82, and I'm actually confident I won't (hope I don't jinx myself!
). But it's going to take a lot more than occasional notchiness and "higher shift effort when cold" to make me concerned. I won't tolerate any actual grinding, but I can live with the other stuff. Seriously, grow up girls. I guess this is what happens when you were overly-coddled as a child and step up to a GT from a Honda. WTFBBQ

A little grinding and rough shifting will leave you with this

LoL @ some of the guys in this thread. I'm really glad that you don't have issues, and that you can attack those that do without merit. It just shows how ignorant and retarded you are.

Yup, I'm a retard.
You have significant problems with yours. Jmatero has significant problems with his. That really sucks, and Ford should make it right.
But the hysteria has got to stop. MOST people don't have problems. That monstrous cesspool thread on AFM consists of thousands of re-hashed posts, 90% of which were made by the same 20 people. I'm no math whiz, but even if that only represents 1% of severe MT-82 issues, you're looking at what, maybe 2000 severe issues out of 20,000+ MT-82 cars?
Again, the rest of the whiners are people who are pansies or don't know how to drive. Not everyone is experiencing teeth being sheered off or popping out of gear.
There are far fewer reports on TMS about MT-82 problems. I think that's because the TMS crowd is more mature and experienced than the AFM crowd, and know the difference between benign notchiness and higher shift effort when cold, and characteristics like grinding that will eventually lead to significant failure.
The mob mentality is ridiculous. The excellent press the 2011 GT got attracted a lot of people who have no business and no idea driving a 400-HP manual-transmission car. The thread on AFM is basically jmatero's personal crusade, and I believe that it is in NO WAY representative of the MAJORITY of MT-82 owners. Again, I wish you and him the best in getting your issues resolved.

But I think what we are getting at is that a lot of people are complaining about things that are otherwise normal. I'm used to rough/notchy shifting. It's normal to me and I can tell the difference between it and an actual grind. Some people without any experience with a manual transmission or who just have unreasonable expectations might associate a normal cold shift clunk with a grind...
Yes, there are people with real transmission problems, but I think it's definitely fair to say that there are a lot with perfectly functioning transmissions that might not think so because of some otherwise normal roughness.
Just to add something else to this mess, mine has started to jump out of reverse whilst going backwards
Not everytime but it seems to be getting more frequent and yes I have had the TSB done with the lighter gear oil.
+1 on this. Keep complaining until a proper fix is had. How soon we forget the *** kicking in quality the ricers put on us. You paid your hard eraned money you should get a quality product. I like this car and am considering buying one but am having second thoughts because of this problem. For my money screw anything made in China.
YOU are the one who created a thread that has no value, and only contributes to the mass hysteria that exists on other forums and I'M the one who needs to quit *****ing? Riiiight...
In your first post you basically said that you're looking for problems that aren't there. You didn't say you had problems, only that you are actively looking for them. That isn't normal. You know what they say about self-fulling prophecies...if you believe in it enough, it just might come true.
Nobody is denying legitimate problems exists. Ford should step up and take care of these people. But there's simply too much unwarranted hysteria out there and this thread is a perfect example.

I hope you don't shop at Wal-Mart either.
Well, there's nothing normal when it comes to rough shifting and grinding. Obviously the picture above proves that. The gentleman that had his transmission opened, had only slight grinding in cold. That, by no means, is not normal.
There are folks with 40+ years of experience driving manuals report issues. There's a 3000 page thread at allfordmustangs.com It's a pretty widespread issue.
Thing is, sometimes this tranny will shift flawless. Nothing notchy, no grinding. Others its crap. That also, isn't normal. It could be linkage issues between the shifter. It could be the clutch, pressure bolts backing out, so many possibilities. Ford doesn't come out and explain the scenario for us. There are a lot of owners dissatisfied with this. It isn't just the "n00bs" you refer to. I have driven manual cars for years. To pay 40k for a car and experience this, is a loss of business. Also, it's bad customer service when they can't even get a reasonable fix out after 1 whole year.
According to polls at the other website I mentioned, 30% of owners are affected by this. 2012 owners are reporting same crap. Some get lucky, some don't. I wouldn't call any of this "normal"

Tell me that wasn't your first MT box?? Holly cr@p what a mess!

I certainly would like to drive one of the problematic transmissions just to compare it to mine. I haven't experienced anything out of the norm and I've got 13k on mine, so it'd definitely be nice to get a better feel for what others are experiencing and how they are interpreting it.
