Is the tick any louder with the supercharger?

 

The tick is gone (for now). Time will tell if it comes back.

 

Does the oil weight have any effect on the tick? Meaning will 5W 30 weight oil get rid of the tick?

 

I don't know, but one poster stated that 5W30 helped, and another said 5W50 made it louder. Not sure what that means unless it's a case of a little thicker is good, but a lot thicker worse.

 

I have following numerous blogs on this subject for two years and no particular oil makes any difference. It seems either you get the tick or you don't. My first engine had it. My second engine does not have it. Both use 5w50. Many others have reported with other viscosity's.

 

That whole tick thing with the 5.0 engines is odd because my 3.7 does have it nor the other 3.7 engines. Only seems to be with the 5.0 engine.

 

I can believe that. I have not heard anyone to this point with a 3.7 and tick problem.

 

Indeed sir. You would think that Ford engineers or their mechanics could pinpoint the cause of this and solve it. This 5.0 tick is indeed a legit issue and been going on for years.

 

I was just reading this article as I was waiting for an oil change. I decided to get Mobil 1 Full synthetic this time. I have a little over 30k miles on my car and have been using the Motorcraft blend and filter from the dealer since day 1. I never had an engine tick sound. I refuse to go back to the dealer. I had my Performance suspension installed by them and it took a week and a half of not having my car. They put my camber bolts in backwards and half/forcibly installed causing wheel shake. This dealership is incompetent and I will never go back.

I heard good things aboit my local Mobil 1 lube place so I went there this time. I got full synthetic with the extended performance filter. I now have a slight tick and it's coming from down below. The car is running fine though.

This is very frustrating because I never had an issue with the noise until this oil change. I really hope nothing is getting damaged as a result.

 

I had the tick develop around 1200 miles, BEFORE I even got the first oil change. I assume it had the Motorcraft oil in it already from the factory. Took it to 2 different dealers and they didn't do anything. I have done 2 oil changes with Motorcraft and 2 with Mobil1 afterwards, and they all still have the tick.

The car drives fine, but the tick is loud and annoying after a fresh oil change. Usually after a few hundred miles, it quiets down a lot and is hardly noticeable.

 

Solution, just get a loud exhaust system. Lol. Can't hear tick no more. Lol

 

Maybe I'll swap my GT500's for Borla or Corsa... LT Headers, off road X.... Problem solved!

The tick came back (again). And it is loud. A false hope was all. What is the fix. What do we do. God dang it.

Now I'm having this strong urge to trade my car for something else. I've actually looked at M3/4's, S5's etc. Yeah, those are nice. But you know what. I find myself coming back to my stang. A lot has happened, all of those efforts, people I met (on or off line) and all the events I have attended. My Mustang made them possible. A history. My enthusiasm and my love towards the car is still a muscular.

Getting a louder exhaust to mask the noise is really a sad humor. I'm going to try out the Amsoil now. I've read numerous and still believe it is the fluid(oil) substance that is directly related to the engine tick/noise. Going to fix this, will keep you updated.

 

I agree and believe it is this in my case. I NEVER had any kind of tick until yesterday when I switched to full synthetic Mobil 1 instead of the Motorcraft that the dealer put in since I got the car over 2 years ago. I do a lot of stop and go driving, every day and so I change my oil at the 50-60% mark. Usually every 5k miles, sometimes less if the oil looks particularly filthy. I never had a tick. I drove a lot yesterday and put about 150 miles on in 1 day. The tick is definitely less frequent/loud/noticeable. I hope this info gives insight. It is definitely not the AC belt and I don't think that it's a problem with my engine. It was like flipping a switch since I put that new oil in.

 

Update... A day later and about 200 miles and the tick is gone. Well, I'm scratching my head.

 

what brand oil and viscosity solved it?

 

I have to take a step back on my last statement. I will make a video tonight, but the tick is back. It literally didn't do it all day yesterday. Yesterday morning I hand washed my car and was letting the engine run at idle while I was detailing and I didn't hear the tick at all. I drove the car around town, did some errands, came back and still no tick. This morning I'm on my way to work at a stop light and I can hear the tick sound bouncing off the other cars next to me as loud as it was when I first got the oil change. When I hit the throttle, I noticed that the tick actually speeds up with throttle response.

The only difference from today than yesterday is the outside temps. It is 25 degrees colder today than yesterday.

For the record - the oil I had in there was 5W 20 Motorcraft (not tick). Now it is 5W 20 Mobil 1. I also now have a Mobil 1 filter instead of the Motorcraft filter.

Two oil changes with 5W 20 Motorcraft oil (after using Mobil 1 5W 20 for nearly 30,000 miles) seems to have solved my engine tick. The first Motorcraft change did nothing, but after the second change the tick did not come back. I generally use Motorcraft filters, but I have used Wix when they weren't in stock.
